Sad. He hadn't looked well.
My daughter, on a brief foray from college yesterday, was flipping through channels and alighted on, of all things, The Torn Curtain with Newman and Julie Andrews. Not the most exciting movie ever to the kid I was when I first saw that film, but now I couldn't help but think--wow...what a good looking guy.

Definitely a class act. It was wonderful to see someone use his celebrity status to do so much good for others.
I had a very brief brush with Paul Newman. Our family was at the famed Sardi's in NY and I went to the men's room. As I came out, I held the door for the man coming in who was Paul Newman. Really. Even without the stage makeup, lights, etc, there was something magnetic about him.

I heard about him this morning. He was a wonderful person -- great actor and also, as Susan pointed out, incredibly generous. It's hard to pick a favorite movie of his. Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, the Young Philadelphians, Butch Cassidy, The Sting. . .

In 1963 I walked from Berkeley to Sacramento with 100
people to help force the Fair Housing Bill out of
committee. It was stuck in that committee by racists.
We sat in in the rotunda of the State capitol for a month.
There was national focus on the situation and the
march was part of the effort to keep it in the
public's eye.
As we finally walked into Sacramento and arrived
at the capitol building, Paul Newman and Marlin
Brando were waiting to greet us. I shook Brando's
hand and said: 'Thank you. You've helped us very much.'
Brando said: 'Thank you. You've helped me very much.'
Newman shook hands with us, leaning back and smiling.
'Hi' he said. 'I'm Paul Newman.'
There were two pre-hippy girls with us, in leather sandals.
They were hip and smart and feminists. As Newman
greeted us, one cried out to the other:
"I can't help it. He's BEAUTIFUL!'
He was the best guy. i'm so sorry he's gone.
Yes, the performance in The Verdict was truly great.
One never knew, as he started a sentence in that courtroom,
if he would be able to finish it.
