I grew up in Pennsylvania and live in West Virginia. I have to say that even the locals would probably have a dickens of a time understanding each other say "whirl." That could be "we'll", "world," "where will" "where we'll" or maybe even some guy named "W. Earl."
Here, whirl differs from world in that the former is pronounced "hwurl" and the latter as "wurl."

Popular artists famous for melisma include Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
Guess that doesn't really make them syllables, but it treats them as such.

Varies:

Temperature: When with family and reverted to my Texan accent, 3. In professional settings 4. (hereafter notated as 3/4 etc)
Comfortable: 3/4
Iron: 1/2
Mire: 1/1
Squirrel: 2/2
whirl: (don't really use this one much) 1/1

And now for my own question: who else pronounces the "h" in whisky/when/where etc?

Temperature has four syllables. How can there be disagreement! It has nothing to do with accent and everything to do with just pronouncing what's there. Comfortable has four. Iron has two. In the eyes of many BBC newsreaders, deteriorate is reduced from five to four ("deteriate") and secretary is reduced from four to three ("seckertry").

Oh, I know. Liebry. Wensdy. Febry. Pryminister. Lawn order. Morl curge. Yurpeens. Merkins. Prelimery. Let's face it, we hate syllables and we'll do our damnedest to eliminate as many as possible. It's different with whole words though. They must proliferate as much as is even remotely humanly possible at this particular moment in time.

As you normally hear it said,
Okay, trying to answer as I hear it said, not as I say it. :-) (I'm a transplant from California to Virginia via NJ, if that matters!)

How many syllables are in temperature? 3
How many in comfortable? 3
How many in iron? 1 (tempted to say two but I just think it's a long diphthong)
How many in mire? 2
How many in squirrel? 1
How many in whirl? 1
