second generation pipemakers

Post by rorybbellows »

The other topic got me thinking about this one. With the amount of makers that have been and are out there now ,sons making pipes after their fathers is a bit of a rarity.I could only think of ,The Kenna's, the Kennady's and the rowsome's ,but there's got to be more?

Thats great Jim,do you think it's something he will stick with it on a professional level ?
"Carroll and son pipemakers" has a nice ring to it

Huh!
It was around this time that he began to learn the uilleann pipes, his for love, at the Cork Pipers Club. In 1926, he repaired a set of uilleann pipes for Henry Ford’s father. These pipes are now in the Ford Museum in Dearbourn, Michigan. Henry Ford wrote back to Tadhg, which led to Tadhg working in Ford’s factory for six months.
Not on display at the Ford Museum's page, but they have quite a lot of stuff:
The museum’s nationally-known collection of over 600 musical instruments dates from the 17th to the 20th centuries and includes instruments used by everyday Americans as well as polished professional musicians.
That's Dearborn, too. Oh Jim! Jim McGuire! Heads up!

It's been a long time since I met Michael, but I think I recall him saying Vignoles was a family enterprise?

Kevin Rowsome spent some time learning to make woodwind instruments. Has he made any pipes, if so, that would give the Rowsome family a direct line of 4 generations of pipemakers - Willie, Leo, Leon & Kevin.

Didn't Sean Donnelly cover that in his paper on the Kennas/Coynes? If anybody knows the answer it'd be him.

Here are two reasons why sons don't follow their fathers into pipemaking, which one do you think is more likely ?

Reason #1 The son see's the father struggling day-in,day-out ,from early in the morning to late at night ,but still they are living in poverty. The son thinks ,there's got to be a better way,and gets a job in a factory.

Reason#2 The father has earned so much money that he has set up a massive trust fund for his son and when he comes of age he can live the life of an international playboy.

There could be other reasons of course, like the boy is tone deaf or is so clumsy that he sticks a fork in his eye everytime he eats a meal, but there is definitely few sons that follow their dear old dad into pipemaking.

A friend of mine has a great qualification: MDB - Masters in Daddy's Business. Apparently, it beats an MBA any day of the week.
