Chinese-Irish Fusion

Post by izzarina »

Or something akin to that....here's my story du jour:

I went to the local Chinese restaurant today with Mr Izz for lunch. Lunchtime, of course, means buffet time, where you can get authentically imitation Chinese food for cheap. Good stuff. So I get my Won Ton soup and sit down. As I'm eating my soup, I happen to listen to the music a bit. Typically, the music is Chinese-esque...at least what I think of when I think of Chinese music (no I don't think about it all that much, but it's what I think of when I do). Today, however, it wasn't the typical stuff...in fact, the main instrument sounded remarkably like a whistle. The more I listened, the more I was convinced it was, and it was even sounding somewhat familiar to me. Then it dawned on me...it was Joanie Madden! I expressed my surprise to Mr Izz, but he didn't seem to be nearly as impressed as I was. Which is why I'm telling all of you. In fact, he was nonchalant, which I found to be irksome, but predictable ;) . Next thing you know they'll have some Celtic band playing while we all eat, and maybe the waitresses will all be dressed as Leprechauns

There you have it...my story of the day. Aren't you glad you read it now ;) In other news, I just received my tickets for Ireland via FedEx. WOOT!

Nonchalant spouses.... don't ya hate 'em?

Guinness does not go well with noodles, in my experience.

Now when you get to Ireland, you MUST go to a Chinese Restaurant! Guaranteed to be slightly different from what you are used to!

There used to be a Chinese restaurant in Dublin called "PHOO KYU"..I kid ye not.
It was generally believed that something got lost in translation between the sign writer and the owner.
It was very near Dalymount park.. if I recall.

Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.

Yes, I can see you gleaning vast amounts of humor over that one ;)

Welcome back, by the way.

I don't think they've gone so far as to serve Guinness yet...that's probably a good thing. And I'd love to go to a Chinese restaurant whilst over in Ireland...I will freely admit that most of the Irish cuisine doesn't appeal to me (in other words, I won't be caught dead with blood pudding on my plate :P ). But I tend to think that it will be more than slightly different...at least one can hope.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I was eating my Sesame Chicken, listening to Joanie play "Women of Ireland"

Didn't the Chieftains make a Chinese/Irish song on "Tears of Stone"?

I was listening to the soundtrack to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon not too long ago and there is a track on there that sounds a LOT like a whistle.
Listen to the sample of track 6 here:

Well, you all did a fine job of hijacking my thread, didn't you? I'm appalled! I mean, *I* would never do such a thing!

Hey, did I mention that another time I went to a Chinese restaurant, I didn't get a fortune in my fortune cookie? I think I should be worried....what does it mean?? :boggle:

They made a whole album.
They were the first Western group to play on the Great Wall.

It's a prophesy - when you eat in a Chinese Restaurant in Ireland, you won't even get a fortune cookie!
