The Skylark

Post by narrowdog »

I've been learning 'The Skylark' reel over the last few weeks
and I'd like some suggestions as to what to put with it to
make a set.

Thanks in advance

Skylark Set

Post by RamblDoc »

Hi Narrowdog:
I, too, am in the process of learning The Skylark; got the black dots down pretty well, so next comes speed and memorization, etc.
SKYLARK / ROARING MARY --------
This is a very common set of reels in the sessions I've attended. In fact, I've seen this pair coupled together so often I consider them "practically married" In this order, too.
Hope this is helpful. Lloyd

"The Skylark" was composed by James Morrison, who recorded it in a set with "Maud Millar" in 1935. That's a nice pairing.

Accordion-player Joe Cooley was the one that recorded the now-ubiquitous set Humours of Tulla/Skylark/Roaring Mary in 1963.

Jonathan, thanks for that nice background information.
Well, narrowdog, I think you've got some good suggestions. In the future, you'll find warm receptions for introducing familiar sets in the comfort zones of many session participants. Good luck. Lloyd

Thanks for the suggestions :) and the background, thanks jumper.

I'll work on'Skylark'/'Roaring Mary' as a set.

Looking at the dots and listening to the tracks I've got I can see they
go together nicely.

Cheers

A friend of mine (and fellow session member) actually has the Skylark/Roaring Mary set up on his myspace page, if you want to have a listen at a nice flute version (assuming his page is not set up as private).
