It's my Birthday.
My 50th Birthday.
I haven't decided if it's a good or bad thing yet...........
And whether the blood be highland, lowland or no.
And whether the skin be black or white as the snow.
Of kith and of kin we are one, be it right, be it wrong.
As long as our hearts beat true to the lilt of a song.

Yay Missy! Happy b-day. That's better than Valentine's Day.
I don't like Valentine's Day much.
When I was a kid, it was a day for certain misfits to feel left out because everyone else got more cards at school.
Now it's a day for the >75% of the population who don't live in romantic dreams-come-true to have to confront the fact,
and the <25% who do to have an artificial obligation placed on them by the advertising industry.
Boy do I sound like a grumpus! I promise, I'm really not that bad,
and if you enjoy Valentine's Day...Go for it! I mean it. Really.
In the opening spirit of the thread--Happy Valentine's Day.

Yes, well...notice my generous usage of <, and >, because, truthfully, I have no idea.Cranberry wrote:Some of us don't celebrate it. Ergo, your totals are wrong.emmline wrote:Now it's a day for the >75% of the population who don't live in romantic dreams-come-true to have to confront the fact,

I agree....Valentine's Day is a "holiday" concocted merely to boost the sales of greeting cards and flowers. Notice, however, I did not include chocolate in that. Anytime is a good time for chocolate! But anyway, I'll bah humbug right along with you, emm.emmline wrote: Now it's a day for the >75% of the population who don't live in romantic dreams-come-true to have to confront the fact,

BUT!!! I'll definitely send Missy a resounding HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! That is awesome! I'm all about birthdays
(speaking of which, my Katherine's was yesterday....she turned 18. The child was over 9lbs when she was born, and she was 2 weeks late on top of that. She didn't see fit to wait until Valentine's Day apparently. And yes, she's walked to the beat of her own drum ever since )
Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent

No, it's a holiday in the original sense of holyday. It wasn't concocted merely to boost the sales of greeting cards and flowers, rather it was misappropriated to that end.izzarina wrote:I agree....Valentine's Day is a "holiday" concocted merely to boost the sales of greeting cards and flowers.

For both of you, here are some quotes stolen from someone else's "I'm turning 50" birthday thread....It was an excellent thread by the way and cheered the recipient up very much. I hope these have the same effect on you(ns).dwest wrote:Mine too. Congratulations. The 50s were good times.missy wrote:ok, ok.......

Aphorism:
"The surest fountain of youth is to grow old disgracefully."
Some may say "you're only as old as you feel" . If that's true I'm about 70 right now. (yes, you do have to get use to something always hurting)
I say, you're only as old as you are in your head. (yeah, that may hurt too on occasion, just take some aspirin.)
Fifty is no big deal. I just flat out refuse to be "old"!
I've always been fond of the saying, "Better over the hill than under it."
If you're feeling down at being old, take heart from this news story:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6959977.stm
As for me all I can take from it is the apparent news that people twice my age get to have a whole lot more fun than I do
Growing older is mandatory; growing up is optional.

I have about 6 more months before I hit that milestone.......
Sure, the body ain't quite what it used to be. But, honestly, I think my BEST years are ahead of me! I'm hoping to retire in the next 6 or so years, and then I can devote time to the things I really WANT to do. One kid is out of the house, and hopefully the next won't be too far behind (contrary to what HE says, he is NOT going to live in my basement, playing video games when he is 35!).
I'm old enough that I don't give a crap what anyone thinks about me. I'm almost old enough that I can get away with doing whatever I want, too!
I always said my theme song for later in life would be "Little Old Lady from Pasadena".
Although, honestly, I think "In Spite of Ourselves" might be closer to the truth!!!!!
