Post by pixyy »

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but just a heads up:

I've just been enjoying these episodes of The Full Set, viewable online at
http://www.rte.ie/tv/thefullset/

with flute goodies from Mike McGoldrick and Matt Molloy amongst other great players!

cheers

Does anyone know what flutes Mike McGoldrick and Matt Molloy are playing in these episodes?

Particularly Mike McGoldrick - how many keys does his flute have? I'm new to fluting and can't seem to count the keys! :D

I gave up on it, myself. I have a mac, and I think there's a problem I don't understand. If anyone can help....

I found RTE’s “The Full Set” with Mike McGoldrick on Youtube, which Mac users can watch - no Real-crappy Player required:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Is that the same one with McGoldrick as being discussed in this thread, or would Molloy be playing with McGoldrick?

yeah, mike's playing seems to have a very pleasant sound to it (not to mention his amazingly natural musicality).
another utube clip (already posted in the sticky thread), and one of my favorites, looks like he's playing with wonderful fiddler sean smyth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVLhskUWH8Q

it really gets me going.

The fiddler's Desi Donnelly, as in the Full Set clips.

This is surprisingly nice. I am really impressed with McGoldrick in a lot of ways, but his music is generally not to my taste. I have been enjoying the full set stuff a lot, though.

I actually just got McGoldrick's album Wired last weekend, and I'm in awe of him. I'm not one to be stickler for things that deviate from trad, and the blending of Irish flute and jazz in particular is like candy to my ears. Strange Journey is easily my favorite track.
