I'd prefer to buy direct from the maker, preferably one living close to me, so I can go and try out before I buy and pick the one that suits me out of a few.
Direct from an maker through the web, would be the lesser option as that is not as easy....you only get to try one at a time, if at all.
Which is making me stick to Overtons .....not that I mind.

From whom would you prefer to buy whistles?

The jury is still out for me, so I didn't vote.
All my current whistles I purchased from domestic web sites or from
domestic makers or from other whistlers. I do like to purchase direct from the maker.
Currently I have two foriegn orders in; one is for a set of whistles from a tweaker in Norway which I made about 4 1/2 months ago and haven't heard anything since.
The other is from Fred Rose which I made just a couple of weeks ago and am already eager for, though I know the wait will be a bit looonnnger.
So, we'll see.

My choices are :
A. - used from established C&F folk
B. - directly from the maker
The order is determined by my chronically anemic wallet's degree of suffering.

To answer mutepoint's questions.mutepointe wrote:My real preference would be directly from my local music store that has a wide assortment of whistle to choose from and try out before purchase. But that isn't going to happen. He did let me try his small assortment of whistle which is a miracle unto itself and a greater option than many folks here have.
Besides the questions on this poll, there could be a questionnaire with these questions added:
1. Do you know anyone else who plays the whistle?
2. How far would you have to travel to see another whistle player?
3. How far would you have to travel to get to a music store that sold whistles?
4. How far would you have to travel to get to a music store that sold medium price and expensive whistle and had them in-store and not special order?
1) Yes - lots
2) About half a mile
3) 5 miles
4) 12 miles and 18 miles for the best selection

1. Yes, we have a small whistle community in our city.mutepointe wrote: Besides the questions on this poll, there could be a questionnaire with these questions added:

2. 15 minutes of walking - one of them lives a few blocks from me :) And on hour on subway to see the next one.
3. 1 hour 20 minutes on subway. Clarkes only.
4. There are no such shops in Russia and ex-USSR.
I like buying them from the local music shop. It's fun going down there and playing with all the other instruments.
I wouldn't object to any of the other means of purchasing a whistle, but so far I've bought all mine (and I have 5 of them so far) from the local shop.
I might even be getting another one for my birthday next month since the last time I visited the shop my boyfriend was with me. I was playing with a low whistle and I think he liked the way it sounded. Since he has to listen to all my racket, if he did buy it, the gift will please us both.
