Tell us something.: irish music, specifically slow airs played on different whistle keys, also lower keyed flutes like Bb, but only from modern makers who have managed to get the hole spacing a little closer. And finally learning some fiddle tunes, mainly slow airs again so that the whole family don't go mad with the sound of a cat being strangled.

Yes its another great clip from Mr Flatley, if you go five minutes into the clip he puts together his flute, I'm guessing Rudall and Rose, if you look really close it appears all the keys have been removed, anyway I will get to the point, the acoustics in the room are very nice but this old flute really honks and barks called it what you will its sound chuffing amazing, so does anyone out there have a modern Rudall copy thats capable of this kind of tone and sound, of course the room acoustics are also part of the recording, but I reckon even if it were played in a lesser space it would still sound great, or is it just me.

I know original Rudalls are very special beasts, but do any modern copies come close, i'd be interested in your views.

I reckon the Byrne does.
A musician of MF's stature helps
considerably, too.

Nice.

I just saw this as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgiaIY8P ... re=related
Glad to see Mr. Flatley is still going strong. Leather pants, shiny jackets, shinier flutes, girls with short skirts/cat suits playing fiddle, all the stuff I love :D
Anyone know if Mairead Nesbitt is still on this?

His flute must be brutally loud. Or can anyone spot a microphone? :P

I believe this flute is an Olwell Pratten.

I especially like the scantily clad
fiddle floosies.

The Olwell small-holed model is a very close copy of Chris Norman's flute. I played an exact copy at Patrick's place, and asked if he'd make me one, but he said all he did was tweak here and there to make it play more easily at modern pitch.

I've only played one original R&R; the Olwell is a way better flute. Hopefully I'll get to play a good R&R one of these days.

You don't s'pose the almond oil is being applied to more than just the flute?

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Nice Clip Henke,

now if that had been me, I would have had to velcro the flute to my lower lip, as I have problems keeping it there when I am static, so hats of to you guys that can bounce around stage like Michael.

sponge :D

ps - shiny glitter tape stuck all over an Olwell flute now that has to be illegal.

Came across this clip showing some fancy flute playing ala Matt Molloy's take on The Mason's Apron by mr Flatley. In my oppinion he should stick to flute playing!

Is that electric tape on the barrel? I used to have that on my flute by Butler before the cracks in it made the barrel fall apart into four pieces! Have since made a new barrel for it, though.

Here's the clip, I hope. I'm new to this.
