A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

The Holly She-Bears a Berry? Sounds like some Christmas Mondagreen.

Here's a good one. It has piping in it so as not to be too off-topic:

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My tulip sent to me:
Twelve drummers drumming,
Eleven pipers piping,
Ten lawyers leaving,
Nine lazy Hansons,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven warts on women,
Six geezers laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a cartridge in a pantry.

There is a tune in my head that I think is called "The Day after Christmas". I think it is a polka. Nor exactly a Christmas tune but there you have it.

Also I recommend:

The Wexford Carol
Pat-a-Pan

When collecting possible tunes for a small Christmas show last year I found a reference that says there are a couple of dozen Wexford Carols. The one I think most people might recognize though fits well on the pipes.

Pat-a-Pan is a nice, simple minor-sounding tune and, unless you have better half-holing control than I do, gives you good exercise with the G# or Fnat keys depending on what key you play in.

A buddy asked me to help him record Pat-a-Pan last week. It went form a simple pipes and guitar thing to pipes, whistel, guitar, mando, bass, bodhran, high-hat, rocked-up thing. When I get the final mastered version I'll post a link.

What about The Wexford Carol. Fits nicely on the pipes if you have an F key, or can half-hole the note. Boys of the Lough did a nice version, as did Paddy Moloney, on Bells of Dublin (I think) with Derek Bell on harp.

For several years I had a gig every Christmas time playing at Spago's in Beverly Hills, alternating between playing Highland pipes outside and uilleann pipes inside the bar area. I would play many of those carols listed plus some newer songs such as Silver Bells (which goes great on the uilleann pipes with all those accidentals). I would also mix in some Jewish tunes.

Excellent suggestion, Paddy!

The Ric Blair Band rocks.

Tommy Martin was playing uilleann pipes with them last Summer at the Pleasanton Highland Games. I had the pleasure to meet him there. A nice gent and excellent piper!

Don oiche ud i mBeithil (That Night in Bethlehem) - play it as a slow air. Magic.

The Chieftains have a version of it on the Bells of Dublin (I think).
