Whoever it was who Elvis Costello was watching. I don't know their names.

The detective in the Woody Allen story who's looking for God. I don't know his name either. I like the Pope too (in the story). The Pope likes fettucine.

Check out the Kenzie and Gennaro novels by Dennis Lehane. The new movie Gone Baby, Gone is from one of the novels.
Do read them in order. In addition to the main story of each novel, there's a back story about the two detectives that really should be followed from start to finish. These are wonderfully gritty novels from the author of Mystic River. Great characters and great atmospheric feel for the back neighborhoods of Boston.

I forgot the TV detectives!

Sam Tyler & Gene Hunt from "Life on Mars".

Monk - but it REALLY dropped off when they fired Bett Thing.

Miss Marple - but the Joan Hickson one, NOT Geraldine McEwan.

The characters in "Without a Trace"

Yer woman in "Medium", despite the fact that Patricia Arquette can be (and often is) REALLY irritating. As she was in "Holes".

I have the firm conviction that Elvis Costello was thinking of Vaughn and Bodie from "The Professionals" when he was singing "Watching the Detectives". I may be wrong, but that is what I choose to believe.

That's true! I had forgotten that the House character is roughly based on Sherlock Homes.

I haven't read many detective stories in awhile. So I'm gonna have to go with Nancy Drew (the originals, I hate the new ones), and for TV, the guys on Law and Order (original, SVU, and CI).

OMFG! Remember the Bobbsey Twins? Yarg!

I mentioned to my wife the dearth of Irish detectives.
She immediately replied with Murphy's Law, starring James Nesbit.
