It is true that spaces were not used between words in Roman times, but then how do you account for the fact that all (I believe) the languages that evolved from Latin do use spaces now?Cranberry wrote:It's only difficult for you because you're not used to it. When I was a kid, I used to communicate with morse code with my home-made amateur radio. We had a symbol that acted like a punctuation mark. The symbol was dah dit dit dit dah. We used it for any occasion when we didn't have anything to say at the moment but we still wanted to hold the band space and let listeners know that we were still there. Being somewhat of a minimalist, I tended to use it quite a bit. Is there any comparable word or symbol in the English language? Is this what the president of the USA is doing when he says "duh" during the answer to a question from the press?
