Sorta light green. I pointed it out to my mother. It was flying up and down and behind that one bush at the front of the McDonald's.

Aren't they absolutely gorgeous creatures?!?

I remember one on the wall at our local TacoBell once... I guess the lights attract them at night, and we sometimes get the benefit of seeing one.

We have them around our place as well, but to actually get to see one for more than just a glimpse is still a rather rare pleasure.

Tell us something.: From the land beyond beyond. From the time past hope and fear. I bid you, Genie, now appear! Well, the Genie did not appear but the notification to type at least 100 characters did so I am back and typing some more as you, if anyone actually sees this, can probably tell.

Once we were lucky enough to see one that had just emerged from a cocoon. The wings were still damp. When they're so new like that, the colors are brighter, all the way from jade green to chartreuse to even a turquoisy color in places. The tops of the wings are edged with dusky purple, and there's a tiny edging of rose pink on the very edges.

When they age a bit, the colors pale down.

The females stay close to one place, releasing pheremones. The males have immense antennae and are able to sense the females from a great distance-- they are very strong flyers.

Something I think is very sad about them is that they do not eat at all during their adult life. No mouthparts! They live off their stored energy until they get tireder and tireder. My avatar looks like an older one

Lovely as they are, I don't think I want to come back as one of them

I seen one a couple of years ago on the roof of a bath house at the campground at Acadia National Park. It stayed there for hours; I took pics and pointed it out to anyone who was interested -- for people camping at a national park, there were damn few who said anything more than "oh."

I seed one just a few weeks later at my mother-in-law's house.

Once, many years ago, I saw a luna caterpillar. By the time I'd gone home to get a jar for it, it was gone.

I will use the word "espied".

Sadly, the only luna moths I have ever espied (see? I mean, espy?) were apparently on their last legs and in tattered condition, every time. Are they more prone to wear than other moths and butterflies?

Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain were on A Prairie Home Companion recently. In his introduction to a tune called "A Moth in the Cupboard," Phil said:

"Did you hear the one about the man who went into a doctor's office? He said, 'Doctor, I think I'm a moth!' The doctor said, 'I can't help you. I'm just a general practioner. I think you need to see a psychiatrist.' The man said, 'I was on my way to the psychiatrist, and I noticed your light was on.'"

Best wishes,
Jerry

I seen a Semolina moth in my cupboard. That was 13 years ago. I'm still seeing its descendents.

Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. We just flutter around and gaze at it longingly.
