Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Indeed surly is in the eye of the beholder.

I've noticed a dedicated streak of tenacity and rugged individualism amongst uilleann pipers over the years. Certainly the very nature of the instrument demands this from its players, and we can be a very strange lot sometimes.

Dale, I think you and the moderators are doing a fine job. Apologies, if any should be made those who take all of this far too seriously! Come on...We're not making solid plans about burning down ophranages nor scamming the elderly, right?

I'm at a loss to put this more diplomatically...in theory everyone posting on this forum are adults or at least old enough to have some sense of other people. Maybe those without a sense of humor or those so volatile that they respond everything as a personal offense need more help than can be offered here?

a few days ago I had the smart ass idea of posting a pole to vote on who is the most SURLY of us all, but I feared Joesph E would beat me with a huge double reed, so I surily showed restraint

Surly: (from the Urban Dictionary)
1.Rude, aloof. Used to describe someone who considers themselves better than others, and treats others as if they aren't even worthy enough to tie his/her shoes.
"The surly man rolled his eyes and told me to go away when I asked him for the time."
2. To exhibit the behavior like that of a dick wad.
"Quit being so damn surly!"
3. An IT specialist who refuses to help and makes you feel stupid on purpose.
"Paul is surly, he won't help me fix my computer's error and keeps insisting it is "operator error"."

Oh geez, what next? I am quite sure that it is a very small number of people whose feelings are hurt by being called "surly" in the forum description. The proof lies in the fact that there have not been any threads locked because of a heated discussion concerning the use of the word "surly" to describe this forum  . So most everyone must like the term as a joke or think it is pretty close to the truth. I guess I wouldn't go so far as to change the description from "A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them." to "A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the dick wads who play them." though.

Oh, listen. I'm just apologizing for offending people by calling them surly. I'm not withdrawing from calling them surly!

Surly? Is that some kind of lotion?

For a perfect example of "Surly," check out this ebay listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Uilleann-Pipes-Full ... dZViewItem

The offering has been noted on this board before, but deserves to be revisited, as the Surliness of the listing, and the Surlocity of the Seller (which this Board is intimately familiar), is exquisite and unmatched.

I love it.

...when I'm being PC, of course: "langer" sounds pretty harmless in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. You've heard some bonafide shameful stuff leave my mouth. After all, our language has such a capacity for choice epithets, whether classic, or crying out to be newly made, that it's hard not to try and fit invective to case like a cheap suit.

Should there be a 12-step program for surly? I'd never fall off the wagon 'cause I'd never get on in the first place. Har.

I'm not surly, but I don't mind being called so.... sure beats being called "Wilty-Petunia-Twisty-Knickers".
