East Coast Tionol location?

Post by vanfleet »

Just a straw poll to see how many pipers would like to see a "East Coast" Tionol in their home state. The poll software restricts how many options I can list, so lets start with the original idea of a "Northeastern" Tionol (sorry Joseph).

The legaleeze might go something like: poll results do not reflect actual likelyhood of Tionol location.

While the state is important for planning any trip, I believe that the venue is the most important factor for a very successful Tional of this scale and its boosting recurring attendance. A self contained venue for food, lodging, classes, performances, and last but not least, partaking in moderate libations without having to drive your car, is very difficult to find, and should most definitly be considered when comparing locations.

Neil;
Yes, all of these factors are important to the success of any gathering; I would add:
* good transportation (close to major roads and an airport, public transportation a plus).
* a venue near civilization, so guests / spouses / weary pipers can go do something else for an hour without having to leave town.

The situation you describe, and which was enjoyed at the Fern Cliff House, is available at just about every hotel in the country. And some of them are located in very interesting and enjoyable places to visit. And most of them are clean and comfortable . . .

I'll concede the big attraction of East Durham and Fern Cliff was having all the requirements you mentioned (but not many of the ones I listed) at a *very* affordable price. It will be hard to find a place that inexpensive, but it sounds like we have to give it a try.

If space is limited take off Delaware (Even I won't vote for that).

Maybe Maryland or North Carolina

Irish Arts Centre in NYC is pretty cool. Ivan Goff has friends there.

Something else to consider, from an organizer's perspective, is the potential for state-sponsored arts funding to help defray the costs of the event.

Well, I'm gonna plug my beautiful home state of Maine here, though right off I don't know of a particular venue that would suit best. I'll bet one could be had though...
And I know folks would be happy to organize: myself included.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

I like Rhode Island..theres great surf in the fall or North Carolina great surf there as well...its not just about piping ..East Durham has great hiking ,but few take advantage... I 'd rather go north for the fall colors....BUT I like the idea of being on the coast not because I surf, ....I just am sick and tiredk of hearing compliants about EDurham not being on the coast!

So much for a surfing Tionol. Looks like the decision has been made.

It would have been a site to see though.
