Howards are good starter low D's.

Burke Low Composites.
In tune. Mellow sound...not real loud. Lightweight, very easy to handle, and no real need to warm-up.
"Easy" to learn? Don't know about THAT...but if I were starting again, it'd probably be a composite Low D, Eb, or E.
Good luck with the Lows. After almost a decade, I still love the sound.

Thanks for the replies. As I did more research, I noticed that David O'Brien makes a low. If it has the same "beefy" feel of his high D's I would consider getting it. Also, it's tuneable for a very low price. The other one I noticed was a Syn.

I really like my high SYNs. I like the backpressure, tone, octave break and construction. If you decide to try the Erle's low D please write up a review for us. I am sure others would be interested.

Kerry easy-blower with plastic head is a great choice. It is reasonably priced and has enough volume for a medium session. I started on it, liked it, and have since switched to a Kerry Pro based on my preference for an all-aluminium low D.

Here's a second for the Burke composite models. Very nice whistles.

You didn't specify which key. I have an Overton F which is pure magic. You don't have to go the whole hog and go straight for a low D. F is a very good halfway step IMO.

I second the F recommendation. It's a bit easier to adapt to than a low D, plus they sound really cool... F is one of my favorite keys, plus the relative minors are cool with an F whistle. I second the Overton praise! My low F is an Overton. Burkes are also excellent.
