Whitney Houston's "The Star Spangled Banner"
I do not believe in patriotism at all, but today I found Whitney Houston's "The Star Spangled Banner" in a thrift store, new and unopened, for $0.50, so I bought it. It's not often that you find a new CD for $0.50.
And after listening to it, all I have to say is: wow.
Apparently she first sang it at a sports game or something. I think it's the best version I've ever heard.
I don't think I've listened much to Whitney Houston, because of the image I get of her, namely that of crack ho. But she can sing.

I'm not a huge fan of Houston. I don't particularly care for all the little frills, twists and other "stylings" she adds to her songs. Reminds me of a trad Irish player who insists on adding every possible ornament to every tune. But that's just me. I like the quality of her voice very much and just wish she'd sing them a bit straighter.

- Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

On American Idol, Randy Jackson calls them runs, and the biggest sin you can make on Idol (besides forgetting the words) is trying to be Whitney Houston when you have no business.

Wish her well...
yeah... sad case at the moment... hope she comes out of it. Drugs have ruined many a life that was otherwise quite gifted.

Did any of you ever see the 1960s samurai movie Hara Kiri?
I think I'd rather do what the young ronin was forced to do with a dull-edged, flimsy bamboo sword than listen to one second of Whitney's music.
Just sayin'. There's soooooooooo much more to music than what our beloved corporate Gods shower us with on Top 40 Radio.

No question. The commercial airwaves play such a narrow slice of it all.Pat Cannady wrote:Did any of you ever see the 1960s samurai movie Hara Kiri?

I can't take too much of her, but that was one impressive performance.

I saw her on an episode of Saturday Night Live once, long ago,
in which she played a catholic school girl singing "The Little
Drummer Boy" in a Christmas pageant rehearsal. I've never
heard such a simple song sound so beautiful. She kept the fancy
stuff down, and just sang. Her voice is really incredible. I wish
she'd forgo the Diva stuff and just sing, it's amazing when she
does.
