Are Americans familiar with Otway?

Buddha,

That is superb.

When I first heard that I had one of those Oh, my goodness! What in the world? moments.

In those pre-internet days meself and a few of the boys had an awful problem trying to wok out just what was going down.
We managed to work it all out eventually..then we sat down and tried to figure out "Burma Shave"...

That took years of thought. There was all sorts of theories about suicide and throat cutting, not to mention the Burma war...

What can one say..

Cor Babe, that's really free

Buddhu, your link to the House of the Risin' Sun made me think of this one-

Billie Holiday & Louis Armstrong doing "Farewell to Storyville"

Great one there Cowgirl

I remember reading once that Miles Davis said, when asked about his influences, " There is nothing that can be done on a trumpet that Louis has not already done"..

I simply idolise Billie Holiday. Oh, how I wanted to be like her when I was still singing! :)

But only like her in the singing department. A sad history there- she definately "paid her dues". Wonder why so many of the true greats had/have such hard lives.....it's almost as if they had a trade off for that talent....

Izz- what do you mean- still singin? Surely if you could ever sing, you're still singing. I never really could sing and I'm still singing, to the horror of those who are forced to hear it. :P

I first saw Waits do 'On the Nickel' on TV on (I think) Old Grey Whistle Test, and a Oh, my goodness! What in the world? moment is precisely what I had. That Oh, my goodness! What in the world? moment has continued with everything Mr Waits has done.

I am totally in awe: I love him. He has provided the soundtrack to my life since I was a teenager.

'On the Nickel' still makes me cry when it catches me unawares.
