I come to read this thread just after watching this week's episode of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe was making cow manure into pots. Quite the process. Very interesting. Very dirty.

I'm also reminded of the episode where his job was to check the herd for pregnancy. With one of those gloves.

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

One of my high school jobs was collecting urine from the winner and second place finisher at the local horse track. There was no touching involved. We had to wait it out.

For performance anxiety when giving a specimen, humans are much worse than cows.

My secret agenda in starting this thread was to sort the people who've lived and worked on a farm from those who haven't. Seems to be working.

my mom's office was on a farm that milked 1500 a day. 22 hours straight of milking.

But if you want to talk interesting procedures, I saw quite a few when I used to volunteer at the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Wildlife at the Cincinnati Zoo. Like artificially inseminating a bengal tiger.........

Well, I'm sure that could be true but at least no one has ever entered the room and tried to hurry me up by doing something strange  !

Now that would be interesting. Really.

I use to do all the AI's of dogs at the vet clinic, since I'd learned to do it with an Alpha bitch of my own who would not deign to stand for breeding.

He,he. I'll presume the male was anesthetized for "collection", talk a bout a dangerous job!!!!!

well, the problem was the sperm couldn't be "kept" at all, but needed to be "fresh".
So there were two operating rooms set up, one for - ah - collection and one for insemination.
And large cats eyes do NOT shut when they are anestisized (I know I didn't spell that correctly) - so they have to be bathed with saline the entire time.
And there's that whole "electro-" stuff.......

Anyway, it was quite a sight.

I wasn't there the day they tried to do the gorillas........
