The fruit of YouTube

Post by Markus »

Hiya all,

As the YouTube flute treasures are being posted on the flute forum, I would like to draw people's attention to a marvellous whistle player posting clips there called Ryan Duns. Here's one of his doings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6MuTDam ... ed&search=

Brilliant stuff I think. Even with all that reverb..

Stumbled over this video a couple of days ago after visiting the new myspace-page of Brendan Ring http://www.myspace.com/brendanring and looking if there is anything of him on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1T2LZqrbzY

Enjoy

Tell us something.: I caught the trad bug listening to Liam O'Flynn. Started on whistle, then moved to pipes. Tricky Basmatis, but I love 'em.

Brendan Ring is fantastic! Pity no one has posted the tune he's playing (Kushka's / Maverick Angels) to thesession.org :sniffle:

His playing is good, I think I could enjoy it even more if it was raw. The reverb takes away from the character of his playing a bit, I think. It's a shame the video doesn't sync well either, I'd like to watch him play. He does have a very smooth, flowing style and sounds very natural and at home on his whistle... has a nice lilt to it.

Did you realize he's studying to be a priest? That's pretty cool. His whistle playing is awesome - his more recent recordings are sans reverb (a response to the criticism, it would seem). He's going to be teaching using YouTube, too.

I was just visiting his blog site earlier this evening - very interesting indeed - on many levels.

I too wish the video was smooth enough that I could actually watch what he's doing as he plays - I think there is MUCH I could learn from him.
