Are your pipes male or female?

Post by rorybbellows »

I was talking to a piper the other night who constantly refered to his pipes as she ,I always thought of pipes as being male , as in the king of pipes !!

What do you think ??

I guess that would be up to the individual piper, and what they prefer to have sitting on their lap. :D

I've never considered instruments, cars or anything in gender form. Some people name things too. Its just wood and brass to me.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I think of my pipes as a concept rather than a gender. Does that help?

I,m the complete opposite ,I tend to bond with my possessions ,maybe not give them names ,but I do think of them as having personalitys

My pipes have a very strong personality, but I,m still not sure if it,s male or female ,I think it all depends on how they are playing or more to the point ,how I,m playing !!!

In french, "Uilleann-pipe" is a masculine word. But it's not that simple because the word for "bagpipes", "cornemuse" is feminine.
How about other languages?

Tell us something.: I’m changing my location to my actual address. My previous location was a reference to Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.

Russian: volynka = feminine
Bulgarian/Macedonian: gajda = feminine
Georgian: gudastsviri = inanimate (class) (Georgian does not have grammatical gender)

Latin- utricula (feminine)

German- der Dudelsack (masculine)- but! die Sackpfeife (feminine). And I've seen "das Bagpipe" (neuter) too :boggle:

Hungarian-duda. Hungarian doesn't have gender , like Georgian.
Slovakian, Polish, Chech- dudy. That's plural, therefore no gender. They got out of this in a rather claver way, didn't they?

Tell us something.: Very much enjoy all flutes, bagpipes and whistles. I'm an older player; however, an active learner. I take current lessons from an Irish Flute tutor, a Boehm Flute tutor and a Highland Bagpipe tutor. I'm a great believer in lessons and without the assistance of a tutor, I find that I would be repeating the same mistakes over and over again, making me proficient in poor music.

With regard to Scottish Gaelic: Bagpipe is femine, piob, pioba (femine); piob-mhor (femine). I think of my pipes and refer to them in the femine. I feel compelled to say that I don't have a gender identity issue, at least I didn't until I started thinking about this issue. Geeeez, I've got a headache, I think I'll go lay down for a minute. :-? Never heard of that ... did I miss something in school ??? But the German language takes strange paths from time to time.
In German the gender of composited words is in this case depending to the ending: Dudel-sack --> der Sack --> masculine; Sack-pfeife --> die Pfeife --> feminine.
