Inflatable christmas lawn ornaments
I'm just curious how you think about those self-inflating, light up christmas lawn ornaments. Personally, I think they're tacky, and just another way america can market the "icon" of something.

I just wanted to add that here in NJ, they're EVERYWHERE. If your neighbor owns them, they're in your face. It's almost commical, because you drive down the street and see a world of puffy blow up santas everywhere.
I'm a firm believer in "to each his own" but man, you can't escape the horrible taste of people around here.

Blimey, I thought I was an old curmugeon!
There are a few around here. Sometimes Pubs stick them on the roof. Very funny when they deflate and flap around.
Last Christmas one of our guys brought in an eight-foot inflatable snowman. The ceiling was only seven feet hight. Seriously bent-over snowman. Very funny. I used to have an inflatable Christmas tree, for inside use, but didn't light up. It punctured. The inflatable cactus is still going, though.

Well, it figures. I'm glad he caught the punks, but the minute those inflatable snowglobes appeared on the market I wondered how long the bb gun toting adolescents would be able to resist.
I'm with you Lee. They're laughably tacky. I guess the key word for me though is laughably. If everyone were utterly tasteful the world would be a less humorous place. Fortunately these things go in waves. Remember a few years ago when suburbanites everywhere decided that if your garbage bags are orange with jack-o-lantern faces they must make good lawn decorations? Then everyone had icecicle house lights, so much so that I began to cheer houses that were decorated with simple lights on a string. Now there are those lights on a net where if you don't place them ever so carefully over your shrub it looks like you've strewn 60watt fishing nets around your yard. Silly old world.

For the record, downtown Annapolis is a place where residents typically like to maintain an historic colonial vibe, and as such are fairly conservative in their Christmas decor. My friend who lives in the historic district near the governor's house maintains that the reason Gov. Ehrlich is now a lame duck is that he put up tacky lawn ornaments at holidays.

surely, I don't literally mean to physically go and destoy them. No one has the right to destroy another's personal property. hmmm
I'd like to try and get some photos posted of my neighborhood. I'm not talking about there being a few houses with these things. THere's an army. It's really funny.
I was walking today with my 19month old daughter in the backback, and saw one that actually moved! it was a rudolf that would pull santa out of a chimney every 20 seconds.
To me, something about the tradition of christmas is lost if everyone does the same thing. I'm a fan of lights on the houses, but most people take these blowups over them now.
I'm a Tiger fan too (to the person above)
That's it... I'm going to find the 70 foot tall Michael Flatley blow up ornament and have him step dance over those little plastic santas!!!

Wow, I was just about to post about these.
I used to drive by a house on a large plot of land, whose owners
would put out lots of lights for Christmas. It was pretty. This year
they must have spent $1000 on those inflatables. They're strewn
across his yard now, and he put up a minimum of lights. Sad.
Probably easier on the old guy, though.
I passed one house where a huge pickup truck was parked on the
lawn. There were fake reigndeer in front, and a blowup Homer
Simpson in a Santa suit was in the bed of the truck holding the
reins.
Also, one of our neigbors have an inflatable, the theme of which is
NASCAR Santa. The elves are the pit crew. You can guess how I
voted...
I wonder if they make inflatable dreidels yet? Maybe a nice blow
up scene featuring the Oak King battling the Holly King to bring
the sun back? That'd confuse 'em!

Sometimes tacky is good.jsluder wrote:I have to caveat my "destroy them all" vote. One house in our neighborhood puts out an inflatable "Vampire Tigger" at Halloween which I actually like. Sure, it's tacky... but it's Tigger as a Vampire! What's not to like?
I always wanted to cover my front yard with as many pink flamingo lawn ornaments as it could hold.
