If you could only have one whistle, what would it be?

The Goldie Overton low D is the one I would miss the most, so I guess the nod goes to it.
No, wait. I must have my dented, scratched 30-year-old Clarke D that I bought as a kid. It plays somewhere between D and Eb. I bought it with my own money and it has been with me through good times and bad, helping me to get over broken hearts, never failing......
Nah, still gotta go with the Overton!
(edited to hide the fact that I missspeled sum werds.)

Of course, I'm totally prejudiced, (Duck! Shameless plug coming...) but I'd still have to say a Serpent "Village Smithy" in high D. Hey, it's gotta last me a lifetime, and besides being Really Cool, the things are pretty much indestructible!

I've only played a handful of whistles, but out of them, I'd have to say the Susato D. I really love the clear, full sound it makes, and this week I've made it more versatile by using the garbage-bag-tie mute. (A life-saver! So simple, cheap, and tidy.) It's also easy for me to play, in terms of breath requirements and ease of fingering. And it looks sharp.

Golly, Haven't tried that combination yet! I have the parts too! I feel a hybridizing evening coming on...On 2002-09-30 14:31, Ron Rowe wrote:
Hands down it's my hybrid GennyClare
Clare head on gen chrome body. Loud enough for sessions, clear bright tone with just a bit of grit to it.
My main hybrid is a Feadog Mk III black fipple on an Oak body. Gets rid of the tingly lips problem for a start.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

My Birdseye-maple Thin Weasel.
I have one or two that may sound better (emphasize MAY) but it's the only whistle I have that actually plays itself.
But if it were a true apocalyptic single-whistle disaster, I'd probably take a Water Weasel or a Dixon. They really do sound almost as good as the big-shot tooters and have a half-life of 50 milloin years.

Indeed a tough decision. I have three favorites that I would never sell unless I was starving and wasn't allowed to sell any more blood.
In a true apocalyptic single-whistle disaster, as Doc puts it, it would depend on whether or not there were any other survivors. If there weren't, it would be my laughing high D. If there were, and they wanted to session, it would be my hybrid feadog-hoover whitecap.
(The third of the three favorites is a Copeland low D.)
