A tableful of flutes

Post by Jens_Hoppe »

I met up with Pixyy the other day to drool over some of our new purchases.

So, without further ado here are a couple of photos of our combined collection of flutes: :)

Image

From top to bottom they are

- Eamonn Cotter 6 key D
- Olwell bamboo Eb
- Olwell bamboo F
- Olwell bamboo D
- Gilles Lehart Bb
- Dave Copley D
- Tom Aebi 6 key Rudall D
- Jon C delrin Rudall D
- Paddy Ward delrin D

Image

EDIT, ADDED THIS BIT:

And here's sort of a meta-picture: Pixyy's wife thought it funny seeing two flute nerds taking photos of their own instruments, so she caught them doing it.

Tell us something.: Just updating my profile after 16+ years of C&F membership. Sold most of my flutes, play the ones I still own and occasionally still enjoy coming here and read about flute related subjects.

It was a memorable evening indeed. Not only was it the first Copenhagen Chiffy Gathering in a long while - it also celebrated the arrival of more than the usual amount of new flutes :-)

Jens' 2 new delrin tooters were a really nice surpise. Powerful flutes and both in their way a joy to play.
The Aebi arrived the day before the meeting, so it's still early days :-) But I can safely say it's a very nice flute. Very, very nice!

A good pint and some holiday pics from Ireland rounded off an evening well spent. I really think we don't need new flutes as the occasion for the next gathering

That Cotter's a real fog-cutter, isn't it? I'm lucky enough to have one.

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

I saw your photo and thought, "Geez, I forgot to drill the tone holes!

- Gilles Lehart Bb

- Tom Aebi 6 key Rudall D

The Gilles Lehart Bb looks like a real honker! Does he use 1" copper pipe on those rings... Looks like a lethal weapon! :D

Re: The Gilles LeHart flute. Does anyone who has a LeHart clean their copper rings, and if so, with what? Mine are way dull, but I'd like some advice before I do something crazy....

Nice bunch of flutes, you two. I love get togethers like that!

something against coppercleaner i.e. Brasso (dunno if you get that stuff overseas in USA too?) ? don't rub too hard though or otherwise it would look a bit weird, like "new" copper, you know?

or you could of course send the flute to me, mary :)

I checked some stuff at the store a while back. One rubs it on the copper, then after a bit of a wait, it is to be rinsed off with water. So I didn't think that would be a good thing. Maybe it's ok to just wipe it off with a damp cloth? Just wondering.

Mary - you can rub on brasso or similar cleaners, not let them sit, and wipe off with a damp cloth. I've used this method to clean the brass parts on a 200 year old leather sword sheath which is a lot more fragile than a wooden flute nad had no problems. The only issue is you may have to repeat the operation a few times to get it really clean.

Thanks, Eric! I'll try it then.

And sorry for the HiJack. Again, the flutes are nice

You did, but it plays a mean low C so I am not complaining. :)

I haven't tried cleaning the brass rings on the Lehart flute, since I like the dull, slightly tarnished look they get. However, if I wanted to shine them up a bit, I wouldn't hesitate to take a spot of Brasso to them. I have used the silver equivalent on silver rings without any bad effects. I would take care not to get too much on the wood, though.

Jeroen's Aebi 6-key and my two delrin whatnots were the new kids on the block at our meeting, and all turned out to be very nice flutes. The Aebi has a sweet, slightly caramelish-with-a-hint-of-vanilla-and-orange sound to it, while my delrin flutes are both extremely LOUD and powerful and sound like whiskey fudge and shortbread. :P

Or was that the beer I had...?

I agree you won't need new flutes for your next gathering. What's more, I think you already have to much of it. I offer myself to enlighten that heavy weight. I think I could do with that Lehart and some Bamboo. :)

Think twice, those strange keys, you never play at sessions...useless...
