That is quite a picture. I've taken about 1000 pictures of sunsets, none are quite like that one. Wow.

All I did was point my cheapie 4-megapixel Olympus up and shoot - I don't think I messed about with the pic apart from a bit of judicious cropping. Here's another I took a couple of minutes before (that's my wife Nicky on the beach, slightly left of centre!):

Image

I think the cloud is a thick wodge of cirrus and/or cirrocumulus. You can see blue sky through it on the right of the pic.

And this one was taken a few minutes later, as it was getting darker.

I think it is cumulus or cumulonimbus. Cirrus clouds are a bit higher up in the atmosphere. Brilliant photos Steve! Congratulations on their publication!!

They were not cumuliform clouds - they were just high clouds lit up from underneath by the setting sun. You can occasionally get high ice-clouds like cirrus in much thicker masses than usual. I think that's what they were. It was an elongated bank of cloud running more or less along the coastline - perspective makes it seem to taper into the distance. It had been a fine day.

I think you are right here, Steve. Cirrus-type clouds can get piled up along the edge of a body of air of a significantly different temperature.

One of my friends took that cloud picture.

He said it means that God approves of gay marriage, because it appeared in the sky in Oregon and Washington last Tuesday at the very time that the Senate defeated the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Gorgeous, Steve! I was thinking about clouds this morning (being a Proud Member of the Cloud Appreciation Society, you know), watching a massive pile of them over the Wasatch Mountains and wishing I had my camera along. Great job - congratulations!
