Calling on the Sacred Geek Oracle

Post by ShadowBG625 »

Okay...for some time now, I have been wanting to upgrade the RAM(?) on my computer. I am a half-geek as well, but this is just a little beyond me. I know my computer has DIMM slots, and already came with 128 MB SDRAM. How should I go about working this out? I went to the Circuit City website, and searching for DIMM cards, I came across "codes" that came with them i.e. PC3200/2700/2100. What should I get now? I thought everything was generic. Do the codes matter?

Any help is appreciated. We can also use this page as a reference. Thanks plenty!

The PC3200 etc is basically the speed of the ram. In the olden days, it was measured in bus speed (pc133, etc). Now, it's measured in megabits per second (thus, pc3200 is 3200 megabits per second, which is a bus speed of 400). It's not generic :)

Your motherboard manual should be able to tell you what kind of memory your it will take. Alternately, if you can get a motherboard manufacturer and model number from the board itself, one of us can probably find the information on the internet.

Do they [Crucial] ship UPS or USPS?
