Drone Stock Empuzzlement

Post by 123454321 »

I was looking at my drone stock the other day when I noticed only 2 holes were open. My question is: How does the air get to the tenor drone?

There will be an internal hole linking the bores so that the stop key only has to stop one (supply) bore

drone stock

It sounds like you have a hollow stock. As Elmek said:

.

The second hole is probably meant to be the air supply for regulators, at least it is on my stock. Is your stock drilled for regulators? In this case, the second hole would not have a stop key or switch, but the reg holes would be plugged until you put regulators onto the set.

My stock has five holes, two of which are open.

The open ones are for the regulators by the sound of things. Who made your set 123454321?

Hi Aidan

The mainstock when used as half set is usually plugged with piece of cork or wood to close the two holes which the regs housing is but should not be open.

For example photo from Tony Hebdon web site.

Does your stock look like this?

The top two corked holes are for the tenor and baritone regs, the bottom three open holes for the drones (obviously removed for this photo)

Yes, Brian, but on the inside there are two open holes and three corked holes. Sorry to bother you all with this.

Yes on the bag end of the stock the air needs to be blocked to the drones so that the switch will work.

Just let go......

Look under the valve. there should be 2 holes poked/drilled in the wall of the bore where the drone switch comes through.
Until I got a full set it took me years to figure out how the air gets to the bass reg reed...

The corks are then in the exact opposite placement of these on the outer end. This allows for the drones to be turned on/off independantly of the regulators which, as far as the stock is concerned, are always "on". The valve that controls the airflow for the drones themselves is in the center of the stock and is then drilled with small holes at a steep angle, probably 30-45 degrees or so to feed the three drone channels. I'll see if I can find a picture for you later on....
