Something I used to get before asking a pretty woman out to dinner.

These terms aren't familiar to me, but if I were to guess I would say they refer to trills and vibrato.

I've seen the term shiver in the Seamus Ennis tutor. It's described as being like a E cran but using only a G, i.e. an long E with a series of G 'cuts' or grace notes on the beat.

I've seen a couple things described as a shake. One a C# D C D trill, see http://www.greylarsen.com/services/tune ... system.pdf and any trill with an interval larger than a tone.

Hope this helps

The best tutor for explaining terms like these is Denis Brook's UP Tutor, available from the Seattle Pipers' Club: http://www.irishpipersclub.org/

IMHO :)

I would consider them to be the same thing: a short trill or rapid repitition of cuts on the same note, depending on how you look at it.

To my ears they sound best on F# in either octave and E in the second. The G is used to ornament either note, a single finger is used on the E.

I like the sound of 3 cuts, very fast.

Although 2 cuts can be good, in the right place.

I've seen both David Power and Paddy Moloney perform this ornament. It appears to involve a shake of the chanter (usually off the knee) in order to produce the ornament. I'll see if I can find any sound files and post them later on...

I always thought it was what you hear on the E here in Sixpenny Money:

But maybe that's something else?

Brook's Tutor gives many examples of possible shakes (quivers) on notes from bottom D 1st 8ve through b in 2nd 8ve. Then there are half-shakes, as well.
