I found three of his recordings over on the eMusic site (lots of Irish trad stuff there--usual disclaimers).

On the basis of the samples, I sure wouldn't disagree with you. Nice, and nice again.

Yeah!

Just ordered his latest, can't wait!

Also learned last week he'll be teaching at the O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat in October (near Dallas), where I'll be one of the folks helping out beginners. Looks like I'll also be doing a couple of info-type workshops on box but I sure hope I can get loose and spend at least a little time in his class:

I may have to drive out there just so I can take the banjo along.

Good call, Rob.

Just recently listened to my sweetie's minidisc of the class Carty taught in St. Louis earlier this month.

Wow. You're right.

FWIW, my fella said he got as much or more out of Carty's one-day class than just about any other single class he's attended (including most of the ones at Willie Week)(then, of course, there are the sessions ....).

But wow, his playing is just gorgeous.

Just got I Will if I Can in the mail today, am home for lunch listening to it.

VERY tasty stuff. The twin tenor guitars are way cool- On Sporting Nell if there'd been a chromatic run up from a low E I'd have thought I was listening to Norman Blake who was suddenly using a lighter touch.

I wish I were that smooth on banjo. Or anything.

I've only heard his playing once and that was on a clip of "Come West Along the Road" a traditional music archival TV series. I'm not sure whether you get it in the states or not.
He played the reel "Coen's Memories" and yes, it was just gorgeous playing. It really puts you in your place as a banjo player that's for sure but also encourages me to go on and keep improving.
I must pick up a CD of his next time I'm in Claddagh Records.

he's a mighty fiddle player as well, but, yes my recent spate of Carty listening has encouraged me to play the banjo more.

he's also a fine flute player, and if i'm not mistaken his father John P plays on a track of the Flute Players of Roscommon cd.

Oh bugger. Just when I'm getting rid of all my banjos and guitars to buy more mandos!

If you didn't hear him on RTE, here's your chance (the April 22nd show):
