The Death of Gilligan vs. a Train Derailment in Chicago

Post by Dale »

I subscribe to a CNN.com service for Breaking News reports. I get an email when CNN considers a breaking story significant enough to email an alert.

As you no doubt are aware, there was a major derailment of a commuter train in Chicago this morning, with one fatality and several injuries. I did NOT get a Breaking News bulletin.

A week or two ago when Bob Denver ("Gilligan") died, guess what! Breaking News!

I suppose they figure more Americans have heard of Gilligan than have been on commuter trains in Chicago. Either that or Chicago's trains are particularly bad?

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think either story made it on the news here. But yesterday's Metro (free paper on subway train) had brief paragraphs about two american criminals and their misdeeds.

Thousands of people die every day. Millions go to bed every night sick and malnourished. Tens of thousands more are victims of some form of violence. Countless others have no hope for any kind of future if they live past tomorrow. I could continue, but I've forgotten what your point was. :boggle:

That was the Rock Island Line. I used to take that train to & from work every day while I was working in the city. My wife still takes it every day, and probably knows the conductors. As of right now . . . 2 dead. 60+ critically injured. Sounds like it happened near White Sox park. (Can't think of the new name of the ballpark).

Metra has a number of commuter trains that run into the city from the 'burbs. This is in additon to the el (elevated trains & subway) that run from the 'burbs throughout the city.

I'm not quite sure why this story would mean more than any of the other stuff I mentioned in my earlier post. Unless, of course, you know the people in the tragedy. They are all just nameless, faceless shadows to most, if not all, of the people reading this.

[Edited to delete a lengthy rant at Trent Lott's response to the recent hurricane and the news flash that many in his state have needed help l-o-o-o-o-ng before Katrina. There was actually a connection between what I posted and deleted, but its not worth the fuss.]
