SpongeBob Squarepants

Post by Jack »

How many people here watch SpongeBob?

For those not familiar with him, he is an insanely popular cartoon character. These pages have a decent amount of info on him and the actual television show:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpongeBob_ ... aracter%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpongeBob_SquarePants

It seems that children of all ages and adults of all ages watch Spongebob, collect Spongebob household items like clocks, shirts, hats, and even eat Spongebob food.

What I wonder is--why?

Why is SpongeBob so popular while other cartoons are not?

I watch it when I am not the one controlling the television and there's nothing better to do.

My best friend is a 30 year old fan of "Bob l'éponge".

It's dubbed into French in France, right?

In America the announcer person on SpongeBob speaks with a strange French accent. I wonder how he speaks in the French version?

I'll try to see that tomorrow morning  (it's almost midnight here, not a good time for cartoons)

I voted "rarely or never" for the time I accidentally changed the channel to some cartoons and there he was, so I was briefly imprinted --VERY briefly-- before I changed the channel again.

Adult Swim is another one that gets my unvote.

At least SpongeBob SquarePants, being from Nickelodeon, isn't quite as vulgar as Adult Swim (or South Park, for that matter).

Oh. I never watched Adult Swim long enough to find out. One glance and my irritation threshold was far exceeded.

I voted "other" since the only times I've seen it is when my grandaughter was here and found it on at the time. She loves it and has lots of the stuff- a stuffed toy Sponge Bob and the starfish Patrick, odd and various books, coloring books,a bath sponge and a Sponge Bob light. We pretend that the plastic muffins she has with a tea set are crabby pattie muffins and have tea with Sponge Bob and Patrick.

Actually, the few times I've seen it, I thought it was kinda imaginative, but I also don't see what the fascination is.

I've seen quiet a few of the kids shows and movies with her and so far nothing beats Shrek and ShrekII IMHO. I always notice something new. Just last week I realized that at the end, when they are dancing to "I'm a Believer"(ala the old Monkees hit), that Snow White is dancing like Elaine from Seinfeld! :boggle: You Seinfeld fans will know what I'm talking about.

Luckily my daughter considers herself too old to watch little kid cartoons, so the only time I've been subjected to the show is when flipping channels. My daughter's friend's little brother (he was 3 at the time) just loved it, so my daughter has seen bits of it over at their house before they moved.

Still, I've caught enough of the beginning to get the stupid theme song stuck in my brain. :boggle:

I suppose looking back that "Mighty Mouse" and "Beany and Cecil" which I used to just love as a kid were just as silly.
