Hey I'm doing that one at the moment too. What a cracker! The B and C parts are great, it's the F part which really gets me :D

Yeah, whenever I find the dots to my favourite tune in various books, I think it's called 'Gan Ainm', it always seems to come out different :D

Nano, I hate ABC. It really stretches my little brain. The Virginia starts something like:

DBBA B2DB |BAdB AF#EF# | DF#F#F# A3 B | AF#BF# AF#EF# etc.

O'Flynn was pretty condemning about calling it the Virginian (an old American tv western) in the Planxty video.

Thanks Peter. I'm sure I had it wrong and that my source was correct.

Thanks, djm. I'll pass on the info. Funny how I got the name from a fellow who grew up in deepest Irish Boston!

I absolutely love this reel, The Virginia. Though it has been a part of my repetoire for only a little while, I find it straining to sneak into almost any set of reels I try to play.....especially after 'The Old Torn Petticoat'.

It fits in very well after The Connaught Heifers, I find.

Dang. Now I've betrayed one of my personal sets.

Ormond Sound it is.
That's my favorite tune right now! Maybe I should try and learn that one on the pipes.

Right now I am working on Palm Sunday and trying to decide what tune I want to learn next. Might be Sport....BTW, can anyone recommend a good recording of Colonel Fraser's? I'd like to learn that one, too.

Depends on how you like your pipe tunes. I'm trying to learn the Paddy Keenan version from his first CD, as it also appears at the end of the Armagh piping tutor, but if you want something a bit calmer check out Brian McNamara's version.

I have the Paddy Keenan, so I guess I'll try and work it out from that. I just need something to get the tune from, and then I'll try and throw in some ornaments if I can handle it!

Thanks! :)

I tend to see Colonel Fraser as one of those piping tune where some parts have evolved to be more ornament than melody.

Good practice for rolls and tight triplets though :)

Good luck

Two versions I really like of Col. Fraser's, is John McSherry's version on the first Lunasa CD (live), and the second being Jerry O'Sullivan's version on his 'Invasion' CD. Jerry does some nice reg work on it.
