So far Malaysia has been free from natural disasters - this really takes the cake, what with Africa getting caught in the line of fire as well. The nation's trying to adjust to the aftermath

How many islands are there off the coast of Sri Lanka and the rest of the the surrounding Asian and African countries? I heard that just one island, which is barely above sea level, had 35,000 population. Nothing is left and nothing accounted for yet.

Fox News just said the earthquake may have shortened our days by something like 3 nanoseconds due to upsetting the rotation of the Earth. And the death toll is up around 60,000. What a mess. (what an understatement).

latest report off of CNN and I don't really know how to verify it. But anyway they are now saying 62,000 dead and the total will most likely double. An additional 35% on the 62,000 will be a direct result of the event itself. The rest will be as a result off disease.

This just looks worse and worse every day. The UN made an estimate at 80,000 dead last time I heard. All the hospitals are full and some even have to shut down due to infection risks there.

I just heard that my friend and his family is safe. They were supposed to stay in Phuket but were off in-land when it all happened. They were incredibly lucky.

I'm selling a bunch of whistles (see thread "charity whistle sale"), with all the proceeds to go to Save the Children, who do great work and lost at least two field workers. FWIW.

100K now, the International Red Cross has opened their family links website to help locate those missing. I found it hard to get the site to respond, possibly because it is very busy.

Thanks for putting those up there, Dale. Here's another one, if you want to add it:

I know that whatever anyone can give to any of these organizations will be welcome. The full scope of this terrible tragedy will become even more apparent as the days and weeks unfold, and people will need medication, treatment, food, clean water, shelter and, in some cases, relocation, for a very long time to come.

Yes, Dale thanks for posting that.

This is an tremendous release of nature, incredible amount of power released. Anyone in an area that earthquakes occur should be on the alert.

A few months ago an earthquake occurred somewhere in the world and a few days later Mount St. Helens almost erupted. My point is the something elsewhere will give to relieve the pressure. Hopefully, it will be in a less inhabited area. Apparently there was already a quake today in the Aleutian Islands that registered about a 6.

I don't mean to sound pushy but:

Many people hesitate to donate in times like these and I cannot say why.
If you have the money, every little bit helps.

Thanks,
