OT: No Motorway Through Tara!

Sorry to impose this on the list but I am deeply disturbed by the arrogance behind this sort of thing.

Can't the gov't of Ireland afford to set some of these special historical places aside as parks or monuments? Is this what comes with economic success?

Its what comes from local indifference. I am told that Tara is seldom visited, and is tucked away out of sight off some backroad. If the Irish can't be bothered enough about their own heritage it is hardly the place of foreigners to tell them what they've got.

Couldn't agree more, Patrick.

I have dual citizenship, and I don't see a problem with making my voice heard.

Tara may be in an 'out of the way' place, but consider what should be the outcry if, say, the Bunker Hill memorial were to be supplanted by asphalt pavement.

(For those that aren't in the known, the Bunker Hill monument is located in Charlestown, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston... the surrounding area is a fairly rough neighborhood... sort of an 'out of way' place, too.)

SAVE TARA!

Just to be clear, the planned motorway is not exactly going through the Hill of Tara but it's the integrity of the whole archeological landscape around it that's at stake.

With all due respect there Patrick I don,t think the heart and soul of Ireland resides in the hill of tara! There is a certain arrogance in that assumsion as there is in other people telling the the people who live in the local area that they cant have a road to aleavate their terrible traffic probelms

Yep - absolutely - every town in Ireland should be like Dublin, right?

"Pave it all, to hell with the history and heritage".

Sheesh.

As for me, I've passed that petition on to 20-something folks on my e-mail list.

:swear:

:tomato:

Exactly! Can you imagine Egypt doing this with the pyramids? And this is exactly the same thing.

PD,

The pyramids are a much better example, well said.

And what the hey - how about a Disneyland amusement park at the foot of Croke Patrick ? :o

Well, they did that in Japan. More concrete, anyone? And don't get me started on China...

I thought you inscrutable Europeans were supposed to be a little more enlightened about this kind of stuff. :D

Do you know what they should do too.
Put a dual carrigeway up Carrauntuohil so tourists can drive up it. Throw in a few lions and tigers as well for tourist to take pictures of and a McDonalds drive through slap bang in Sally's Gap, none of yer aul chip vans there. maybe a Jack in the Box. (for those reading outside the USA, Jack in the Box is a fast food place that stops you from shighting for days)

I do realise the road is not going through the Hill but there are alternative routes. There are local farms split in half, parents have to drive 5/6/7 extra miles to get to a crossing to get to work, school. I've relations in the area and my parents are 13/14 miles away from it so I'm hearing all the gossip.
its the same old same old, local construction firms are still firing brown envelopes full of cash to local politicians for contracts and bankrupt farmers are screaming at the local planning authorithy "BUY MY LAND"
I'm from North County Dublin where if you wanted planning permission for anything, large or small, you bribed the local rep. And its still happening.
Its a loadamebollix.
