I wouldn't go for Shellac, there are better bonding options available these days. Whoever is doing the lip plate will no doubt have something they use regularly.

the thing about shellac is that you can easily unglue it with heat, if you're not happy with the results, I'm not sure how would you clean Epoxy or other adhesives, I think Super-glue would react the same as Shellac to heat but Shellac is more elastic and would hold better with wood movement, and is a dark gap filling like Jon said.
go with Shellac ;)

Hi,
A lot of the makers still use Shellac.
It is also used to glue key pads on the saltspoon keys.

also used to hold the first layer of thread on wrapped tenons.

Shellac bonds aren't as strong as some of the modern alternatives, which makes it great for pads, not so great for something like a lip plate. Many epoxies debond when heated, so these are often a good option when more strength is needed on an item that can be heated (for debonding)like a lip plate.
