"Thanks Loran and everybody else. Your info makes my decesion easy to make. I'll go with a plate and shalac."
I wouldn't go for Shellac, there are better bonding options available these days. Whoever is doing the lip plate will no doubt have something they use regularly.

the thing about shellac is that you can easily unglue it with heat, if you're not happy with the results, I'm not sure how would you clean Epoxy or other adhesives, I think Super-glue would react the same as Shellac to heat but Shellac is more elastic and would hold better with wood movement, and is a dark gap filling like Jon said.
go with Shellac
go with Shellac

- Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Shellac bonds aren't as strong as some of the modern alternatives, which makes it great for pads, not so great for something like a lip plate. Many epoxies debond when heated, so these are often a good option when more strength is needed on an item that can be heated (for debonding)like a lip plate.
