There is a reason why London has so many people - it's where work is easiest to find. Wheer you can find work, and where you might choose to live, may not coincide. Of course it depends on the sort of work you can do.

You really have to think of London as a conglomeration of smaller towns surrounding a small central area. Ealing, where I live, is about a hour and a half by foot and tube to get to Camden Town where Avanutria is. If I had a car, the same time would see me in Swindon sharing a cuppa and an eccles cake with Gary.

When Sam T came over for a Sunday afternoon session it took him a similar time to get over to Ealing. Three hours travel for a two hour session is a pain. My journey to work takes about 45 minutes, by bike or tube, but some people travel in from dormitory towns like St Albans every day. I personally would not want to spend more time travelling than I already do, but millions do it every day. There is a trade off between housing prices, council taxes, and time you are willig to spend travelling.

Maybe I can sum up my feelings towards London by saying I was born and bred here, live here, but do not intend to die here.

Quite. You still need to visit Stavromula Beta anyway.

(oh yes: I voted for England, because that's what I chose.)

Middlesex

Some talk of Kent and Devon, or Sussex by the sea,
But the county nearest Heaven, is a county dear to me,
Middlesex, so bold so fair, Middlesex, beyond compare,
Though it’s not there now, Thanks to the GLC*.

If Middlesex had wide open fields,
At harvest time, the record yields would fill the barns with golden grain,
And fruit swelled by the autumn rain, would weight the fruit trees low,
Would weigh the fruit trees low,
But they don’t and I should know,
I’m part of God’s great plan, I’m a Middlesex Man.

*Greater London Council, showing that this song is old.

I like Shrewsbury myself (the countryside around it is even better), and there are some great Shropshire jokes out there.

Nice song, Martin. We'll make sure to you have shipped to Middlesex for your last gasp. :)

Yeah....but no seaside, no beaches, no cliffs, no Atlantic breeze - just John Kirkpatrick!

Cheers

Definitely Wales and specifically here:

Great pics here: http://www.gigaflop.demon.co.uk/aberpix.htm

I wanted to do my graduate work in Librarianshlip at the University of Wales, in Aberystwyth. Now I would like to go back and kayak/walk the coast of Wales.

And it has, well almost nothing to do that my aunt is Welsh, coming from Pembrokeshire just down the road, which I viisited as a kid long ago.

Wow, nice photos Mark.

Martin, I agree that a good place to go is where it's easy to get work. I am going to need work when I arrive to the UK, but with all the commute you're talking about, whoah, I'm not sure London is the right place for me... I already have a hard time enjoying the Montreal public transit system, which is quite efficient!! (I walk everywhere as much as possible...)

I think we may safely discard Rockall from your list of possibilities then.

Moxy, I'll vouch for Northern Ireland.
Beautiful and the people are just super, some of the nicest I've ever met.
Can't tell you much about finding a job etc. but I'd jump at the chance to go.
And you won't miss Montreal weather :)

Even better, imagine a song called Rock On Rockall...

Oh the Empire it is finished
No foreign lands to seize
So the greedy eye of England
I stirring towards the seas
Two hundred miles from Donegal
There's a place that's called Rockall
And the groping hands of Whitehall
Are grabbing at it's walls.

Chorus:

Oh rock on Rockall you'll never fall
For Britains greedy hands
Oh you'll meet the same resistance
Like you did in many lands
May the Seagulls rise and pluck your eyes
And the water crush your shell
And the natural gas will burn your ass
And blow you all to hell

This rock is part of Ireland
For it's written in folklore
When Finn McCool took a sod of grass
He threw it to the fore
When he tossed a pebble across the sea
Where ever did it fall
For the sod became the Isle of Man
Now the pebble's called Rockall

Chorus...

Oh the seas will not be silent
While Britannia grabs the waves
And remember that the Irish
Will no longer be your slaves
And remember that Britannia well
She rules the waves no more
So keep your hands off Rockall
It's Irish to the core.

Chorus...

But I fear we're straying a little OT :)
