Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

These uilleann pipers are still with us, alive and kicking, and are my favourite living pipers in alphabetical order. Different styles of playing, but all very, very interesting to listen to. I've been lucky enough to hear them all play live at one time or other except for Billy McCormick and John Rooney, I've only seen them on video so far, but they made a lasting impression. :

I once asked Dennis Brooks who his favorite piper was (expecting to hear Ennis--or something of the sort), but he said Willy Clancy.
brooks saying clancy suprises me. i have a tape of dennis and tom kreegan from 1986 and brooks was in a leo rowsome phase at the time, or at least that night. well it just goes to show ya.

I like, in no particular order

Nollaig McCarthaigh, 'specially when he plays Maid in the Cherry Tree.
Mick O'Brien, say no more.
Keenan, doubtlessly a great and powerful musician.
McSherry. Crisp, inventive.
Nick Scott, 'cos he's great crack.
Dermott Moynihan, sweet, lyrical playing, unsurpassed composing.
My little lad, 'cos he just managed to empty my cane stock all over the living room.

7 is a lucky number.

(This just reminds me of Rai music where the singers are Chab or Cheb followed by surname, when they become truly great they are referred to by surname only. Cheb Khaled became Khaled, Paddy Keenan became...Keenan etc.,)

Now guys n gals, put up your wavs for the 'greatest' C&Fer poll........

Tell us something.: I am a walrus, I am a tea pot. John Lennon said that but people see him as a guru. Well, tell, you what he also almost became a piper asking Paddy Keenan to teach him. (bleep) got bored & went on the sitar and the rest is history.

Peter Laban very kindly sent me an mp3 of Willie Clancy playing 'Rackish Paddy' in 1953. He wouldn't have got 'The Knock' for that one. Great stuff, thanks again Peter.

Can anyone tell me more about Éamonn Ó Bróithe other than what's on the web? He's a piper involved in folklore and sean nós singing? My interests are peaked... so to speak.

Patrick.

Pretty sad, that this thread has carried on for 3 months and only now has someone (AlanB) mentioned John McSherry.

Tsk, tsk, we should all be taken to the shed.
