While I could still loose maybe 20 lbs. most people would not call me overweight. Type 2 diabetes forced me into a corner. Life stye changes were the answer for me. Lots of vegetables, and lean meat were the answer.

Weekly weigh in:
228 (-12) lb

I knew there'd be some more weight loss this week..

I'm up to walking 4.5 miles a day. I'm pretty sure I'll stay at that amount for the forseeable future. I really can't devote much more than an hour a day to walking...Maybe I'll start jogging after I get used to this distance.

This diet is so darn slow. But I have found that cheating a little actually helps! Down to 156.4. Another 15-20 pounds to go.

Two more weeks, down one more pound. At this rate I'm going to die of old age before finishing the diet. At least I didn't gain, I suppose.

:D Boasting time.

My physician suggested/ordered me onto the South Beach Diet which I started on August 1st. The South Beach Diet is a diet that limits or eliminates certain carbs from the diet and also limits certain fats for the diet. The first two weeks, phase 1, are very restrictive. After the second week, phase 2, some carbs are slowly allowed into the diet. I would never suggest that anyone every try this diet without first contacting their physician. Enough with background...

Between August 2nd and August 29th, I lost 17 pounds and went down one pants size!

17 lbs in 4 weeks is very impressive. I am happy if I lose a couple of pounds a week. Do you think your chances of keeping it off are good? Just curious.

Way to go!

I should caution folks, though, with the phrase YMMV--"your mileage may vary." I'm willing to bet the guys can drop weight faster than the girls.

I've been wandering from phase 1 to 2 and back again to 1 on South Beach, and even when adhering to the strict phase, don't lose that much that fast.

But it's working better than anything I've tried to figure out on my own!

it's pretty cool that on the day that I decided to start, I found this cool thread.

Is there a specific format to posting here?

Thanks!

oh great!

So here's my story: I used to have an unhealty obsession with my weight, obsession like the thoughts would come out of nowhere, me thinking i was totally huge and that... I had a really bad self-image.

I was really athletic, kickboxing, cycling, etc but a very sporty body type. Sigh...influenced by tv and magazines, I was a mess.

So i was bulemic for awhile and it was so totally stupid. Then I went on diet after diet, yo-yoing with my weight. It didn't help that my parents often tell me, when I come home to visit, that they can't stand to look at me since I'm so fat and that they are totally embarrassed of me. *sigh* parents...

Anyways, the crap hit the fan, I moved out, never to return home except for the occasional holiday and aam now trying to get back in shape. I'm looking to drop a few pounds, well more to tone up because muscle does weight more than fat so saying "drop a few pounds" is wrong. :P

So I'm trying to stay healthy, eat healthy and live and think healthy.

This is an update on my adventure in the South Beach Diet. My physician suggested/ordered me on this diet. I would not suggest that anyone go into a diet as serious as the South Beach Diet without consulting a physician.
That said, the following is a status/boast that I just put on the South Beach Diet Forum:

Finish Week Five, Unbelievable!

I have just finished week 5 on the SBD, and the results are unbelievable! I have lost a total of 23 pounds. I have been on phase 2 for the last 3 weeks, added homemade bread and muffins to my diet. Additionally, I have added some fruit back into my diet.. On this diet there has never been a day that I can say I was hungry for any long period of time or felt deprived. I have enjoyed the challenge of making healthful, tasty meals and baked items. Best of all, all my morning blood glucose levels starting after the third day have been under 108. Since I am a type 2 diabetic that can, according to my physician, control my diabetes by diet and exercise, this is the fantastic news! Here is a list my weights taken on a balance scale at the health club of which I am a member. Even weigh-in was taken before exercise, wearing the same clothes, and at approximately the same time of day.
08/01/2004 – started SDB Phase 1
08/02/2004 – 245 pounds
08/04/2004 – 241 pounds
08/06/2004 – 240 pounds
08/09/2004 - 239 pounds
08/11/2004 – 235 pounds
08/13/2004 – 235 pounds
08/15/2004 – started SDB Phase 2
08/17/2004 - 233 pounds
08/19/2004 – 233 pounds
08/23/2004 – 231 pounds
08/29/2004 – 228 pounds
08/31/2004 – 228 pounds
09/04/2004 – 222 pounds

If I seem like I am boasting, well, I am. I think I have earned it!

Wow! Perhaps if I had been a little more dedicated to following the South beach diet, I would have lost more. I have been at it (a bit modified - I have dairy, but no sugar, no fruit, no starches, etc.) for about 2 months and have lost about 15 pounds. I want to lose another 15 and then I'll be happy (and ready to get knocked up again).

:)

Age - 49
Height 5'3"
Starting weight 160 lbs
Current weight 157 lbs
Desired weight 130 lbs (or less)

Weekly check in time. I've only lost a couple of pounds since I joined the gym but I am feeling a hell of a lot fitter and I'm told muscle weighs more than fat so my fat content has probably dropped a bit further. Slow progress but I'll be happy if I can reach my target by the time I turn 50 next Feb 14th.
May the joy of music be ever thine.
(BTW, my name is John)

My wife gave me some belts for Christmas a couple of years ago. I was concerned that they might be too tight -- I think I was wearing them on the last or next to last hole. I realized the other day that I'm wearing them on the first hole now, despite being only about 10 pounds lighter.

I'm still at 163, unchanged for the last week or two. As John, I feel great; I would be happy to hold steady for awhile, but it's the principle now. I NEED to get to 160.
