questionsquestions :)

Post by Eleanor »

Hey!

I am new here so I`ll tell a little about myself first.
I am 20 years old, and fantasy artist.
One year ago started to get obsessed with Tin-Whistle music.
(I already had an obsession for irish music in general  )
One week ago I found a store with Tin-Whistles, and I took one with me.
I`m not sure if it is a good one, it was quite cheap.
Its a generation.

Now I have one, its difficult to find a teacher.
It seems that the netherlands don`t have many of them. :sniffle:

I stil want to learn playing this, and that is leading to my question(s):

-Can you give me advise, about how to begin without a teacher? What can I learn from myself and what not?

-I have a D whistle now, is that a good one to start with? ore should I buy another one?

-How should I take care of the whistle?

-Can you give me names of good whistle players?
so that I can listen whistle music as much as possible, that should be a good thing to :)

And the last question:
Are there dutch whistle players here? Maybe they know a teacher

Many of us started on our own, so to speak. There are some online tutorials. Check the C&F links page. Bro. Steve's page is also known as a good starting point. It is considered good to find recordings of the old masters, so to speak, to learn the general style, and tunes.

-I have a D whistle now, is that a good one to start with? ore should I buy another one?
Yes, D is a good key. It's nowadays considered the standard. You'll be able to play in D, G, and Em on it. You may want to get more keys later, if you want to play with other instrumentalists in various keys.
-How should I take care of the whistle?
Knock the spit out of it, when you get done playing, or when it clogs. :)

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

That should keep you busy for a while.....

Oh, and here is Bro. Steve's address

Stichting Volksmuziek Nederland has music weekends that include whistleclasses, you may want to look up their website, (search for SVN).
Where are you based?

Yes, there are some dutch people on this board (including me :)). It's nice to see another whistle addict from the Netherlands :). I'll contact you off-board for more info... feel free to ask any questions at all times. (Not that I know that much, but maybe I can get you on your way a bit.)

Walden,
Thanks for the answers, I`m glad to know that starting on your own is done by more people.
Sometime people tell you not to do that, Like when I started with the gitar.

How can I play G and Em on the D whistle?
Ore is that to difficult to explain?

NorCalMusician,
Thanks for the (very) usefull links!
Great to start with

Peter Laban,
mm that sounds very interesting.
I am going to get information about that.
I live near Amsterdam (Netherlands) in a place called Heemskerk.

How do you know about 'stichting volksmuziek nederland' you are not from the Netherlands are you?

Anyway, thanks for the answer :)

Robin,
Great! Because I can use a little help, thank you.

D scale:

xxxxxx
xxxxxo
xxxxoo
xxxooo
xxoooo
xooooo
oooooo
oxxxxx

E minor scale:

xxxxxo
xxxxoo
xxxooo
xxoooo
xooooo
oooooo
oxxxxx
xxxxxo+

G scale:

xxxooo
xxoooo
xooooo
oxxooo (this note varies a bit from whistle to whistle)
oxxxxx
xxxxxo+
xxxxoo+
xxxooo+

X means covered holes.
O means open holes.
Left is the mouthpiece end.
+ means blow more firmly to make the second octave.

Another way to make the 4th note of the G scale (C natural) is by "halfholing," or only partially covering the top finger hole:

Here's something that might help - the Circle of Fifths:

Image

Take the key of the whistle and find it on the circle. The major scales which are easiest to play are the whistle key and the one immediately counter-clockwise of it on the circle. The minor scales which are easiest to play are the ones two and three spaces clockwise of the whistle key on the circle.

The major scale immediately clockwise and the minor scale four spaces clockwise are playable, but more difficult.

Hopefully this helps.

Walden,
You illustrated an E-Dorian Scale not E-Minor.
E-Minor (Aeolian) scale has a Cnatural in it.
Cnatural (OXXOOO)
E-Dorian has the Csharp in it.
CSharp (OOOOOO)

Eleanor,
For a good discussion of Scales, Keys and Modes, there is a fine paper
<a href=http://www.geocities.com/novairishsessi ... .htm>Irish Modes and the "D" Tin Whistle.</a> by Jos H. Hindriks. It can be found on the <a href=http://www.geocities.com/novairishsession/>Northern Virginia Irish Session Website</a>.

Welcome to the wonder world of making music. Listen, Play, and ...

Yes, it's E Dorian (or, as I prefer, Re mode). I'm always in E Dorian. :)

An E minor (not Dorian) scale on a D whistle:

xxxxxo
xxxxoo
xxxooo
xxoooo
xooooo
øooooo
oxxxxx
xxxxxo+

B minor scale on a D whistle:

xooooo
oooooo
oxxxxx
xxxxxo+
xxxxoo+
xxxooo+
xxoooo+
xooooo+

I have several good Generation whistles, but my favorite is the Clarke original design.

When/if the fipple (the red thing if brass, the blue thing if nickel plated) clogs, cover the windway and blow out the "music juice" onto the bodhran player :boggle:

My favorite whistle players:
Sean Potts
Paddy Maloney (both on Chieftains albums)
Micho Russell
Mary Bergin
Joanie Madden
Vinnie Kilduff
Sean Ryan

E-Dorian has the Csharp in it.
CSharp (OOOOOO)
.......
Took the words out of me mouth Lee.

Eleanor,
With your D whistle you also get your
F# Phrygian from XXX XOO
A Mixolydian from XXO OOO
A Dorian also from XXO OOO but with a 3rd note as OXX OOO
B Aeolian (ie B natural minor) from XOO OOO
B Phrygian also from XOO OOO but with a 2nd note as OXX OOO
and C Lydian from OXX OOO
Also, as well as the G Lydian from XXX OOO
you can also do G Ionian (G major) with 4th note as OXX OOO
(as per London Derriere).
