Gary: Wow!
You saved me the trouble of posting on "where does an Atlanta beginner begin".
So are there others of you in Atlanta? Where do I find you all? How do I learn this stuff?
What the devil is a "session"?
How do I avoid being intimidated?
What's the best way to begin?
Is this workshop appropriate for beginners?
At what point have I asked too many questions?
I would love to hear if there's any activity in the Atlanta area.
I have a strong background in flute, but want to try whistles after seeing Great Big Sea in concert here last month.
And some celtic music website suggested Flook's Rubai cd, which I have listened to over and over and over for the past few days. It has absolutely blown me away to the point I stood in a parking lot this very evening with it full blast, making friends and family listen to it.
Good lord! They didn't teach us tonguing like that in concert band!
Oh happy day, must run and check calendar and make sure no conflicts....
And and all advice appreciated!

Wow. That's actually close enough that I might make it. Since I started back at Christmas, I have yet to meet another whistle player face to face. Technically, though, from buying and trading whistles, I have probably come in contact with DNA from residue on whistles. So, if push came to shove, another whistle player could be cloned from the dried spittle trapped in a whistle I recieve.
Oh, there is a group that meets once in a while from slow sessions here, but something comes up every time they do and I can't go.

My opinion is stupid and wrong.

Yeesh! I see why you are VomitBunny.
I just bought four whistles off Ebay, and the seller sent them to me in an old nasty sock.
Heaven only knows what might be cloned out of the fatal combination of old spit and athlete's foot.
What group and what slow sessions? Can anyone go? Just to listen?
BTW, any suggestions on cleaning out used whistles? I tried washing them in hot soapy water. I hope I didn't commit any cardinal sin, I mean you boil head joint corks, right? I was trying to be logical.
One of them seems to be rusty. Any solution for this?

I.....I....I think the dried spittle gives the whistle "character". I don't know about the sock thing.
I don't know the group. I just found out about them about a month ago. Hopefully sometime soon my on call time and session time will not coincide. I've got to show off a whistle or two besides. I did find their site and downloaded a couple of books of tunes though. Quite nice. Not as many "standard" tunes as some books, but several of them really cook up to speed.

VB, do I understand you to say that some of the groups will put up print music you can download?
Where can I find it?
I'm sorry to ask so many questions! Anybody want to be my mentor?
I finally figured out what a session was off the hyperlink to the workshop. I thought everyone meant recording sessions. D'oh!
As far as anyone's spit lending character, got plenty 'o my own, thankyouverymuch. Character, that is.

Glad to know there is interest in the workshop.
As to making contact with other whistlers in the Atlanta area, I would suggest two things.
Attend the slow session that is held once a month, next one is June 12. You can attend one as a non-member, but if you want to come back you need to join CCE (check the website for cost and details, but its pretty reasonable)
http://www.irishmusictraditions.com/
Second, there is a regular session at Fado's in Buckhead on Mondays. There're a couple of whistle players who usually attend, you can introduce yourself and at least have met another whistle player at that point!
Please note that the Monday sessions are not for beginners (thats what the slow session is for) and the people at the Monday session are there to play...so you may have to wait for a break or wait until it breaks up before they will have time to talk to you.
The slow session kinda' expects you to be able to play your instrument, so is not intended for absolute beginners, but listening in would be a good place to start if you want to meet other aspiring musicians.
Also, CCE is focused on promoting traditional Irish music...that doesn't mean that individuals don't have other musical interests...just that the organized CCE functions are specifically targeted at ITM.
Hope to meet some of you at the sessions or the workshop. I play whistle too, but have been consumed by the pipes.
PM me if you want more info, or reply to the post on the Uilleann Pipe forum as I don't check this board too often.
Regards,
Gary
