I must confess, I saw a post like this on another message board and thought it was a cute antidote to all the trite year end/new year's drivel we're subjected to.

I was not offended. I feel left out. Would you please rectify that in '04?

Not to hijack this thread, but Walden's sig has me rolling my eyes at myself... how embarassing to admit this, but for all my 32 years I have thought that it was "Four calling birds", only to find out I was supposed to have been singing colly birds all these years.

"Colly" isn't that a breed of dog?

'Collies' are the dog. Here is a link for an explanation of the colly birds of the song:

Don't worry about it -- most people sing calling birds, and that's what I've seen in print more times than I can count. In fact, this is the first time I've seen "colly" birds. It may be an older, perhaps even original version that got changed to "calling" by people who didn't understand it right, but that's what's become the common version now. "Colly" is certainly interesting, though....

"Colly" birds is a more original lyric, but since no Yanks really know what the heck a colly bird is...even many songbooks will use the words "calling birds."

edited to say...oops, yeah...you guys already covered that one.

Catholic Information Network now offers this post script at the end of their article, which helped popularize these claims, "It has come to our attention that this tale is made up of both fact and fiction. Hopefully it will be accepted in the spirit it was written. As an encouragement to people to keep their faith alive, when it is easy, and when any outward expressions of their faith could mean their life. Today there are still people living under similar conditions, may this tale give them courage, and determination to use any creative means at their disposal to keep their faith alive."
