Dumb move, Bill. This whole thread was about to die a painless death, and would have had you not kicked it back up.
The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.

- Tell us something.: From the land beyond beyond. From the time past hope and fear. I bid you, Genie, now appear! Well, the Genie did not appear but the notification to type at least 100 characters did so I am back and typing some more as you, if anyone actually sees this, can probably tell.

Actually, Zoob, it's happened to me, too. Just not as severely. And Walden was actually there for a large part of it.1) Read back, Walden: FAIK, Cran' said it happened to a friend of his.
2) It's a case of the man who saw the man who saw the wolf; all virtually...
3) Agreed it's not public business, but a case of someone with problems playing it mean with someone with his own problems. None of our problems, one by one.

Me, either. I find Stacey's posts (and avatars) wonderful. (And I have never ever ever recieved any free whistles from her.)Do you really find Stacey's off-the-cuff riffs insulting? Tactless maybe, but generally entertaining...and given the way her personality comes across on the board, I wouldn't take any of it in a deep personal way.
That is very informative, and I think it clears a lot up. I just want to say, Thank You, Alan.Quote @ Alan
At that point I decided to give Bill a very firm NO to his request and told him I would not give in to what I felt were his attempts to manipulate me.

And he denied it to you. Get over it, and DON'T post it here as a part "I asked you to let me post this information". You're doing it anyway.I did NOT ask you to do any such thing. I asked you for one specific thing, only, that being to allow me to post the information --advertising information deleted on my part-- I think we must have been in two entirely different universes that night.
That's the privilege afforded to him as moderator.Thank you for being judge and jury, Alan.
You're advertising again. It was not the next night in chat. There was no "next night in chat". It was the same night, and I did NOT "HOLLER AT" you. I put forth the information about Grey Larsen's book to everyone there, in large caps, and left.
Quite frankly, it was because Dale was too willing to allow you to push him over with an advertisement every 2 seconds, and I for one am beyond thankful that Alan will not allow that.Funny, I've never had this sort of thing happen with Dale. But then, Dale has never made a judgemental comment about my motives.
Veeeery interesting *imagine this with an Albert Einstein voice. It's funnier that way*
It seems like serpent's manner has come across poorly to many people. That will happen in a written medium and I have learned to take what seem to be "grumpy", "gruff", "bitchy" or what-have-you types with a grain of salt. It's so hard to interpret personality in this format and I have found that I can usually learn something from everyone.
Anyway, seemingly grumpy guy advertises his own stuff too much (and ticks certain people off) and then isn't allowed to mention anyone elses stuff because that would be advertising as well. Strikes me as a bit ludicrous.
I happen to like Generation whistles and I think you should get one. Whoops! I advertised. I also like Sindts! Dangnabit! I advertised again! I also think that Grey Larson book looks pretty interesting. Strike three!
Come on, folks. If mentioning an appreciation for something even when you get no money and don't benefit from it is called advertising... we all do that! We recommend whistles and books and cds all day long and argue about the merits of each one. Maybe that was all he wanted to do?
No, I don't know serpent. No, I don't own any of his whistles. Yes, it is an indication of the sorry state of this board lately that I felt I had to mention that I don't have any connection to him.
Now, can we get back to the good stuff about this time of year? Family? Friends? Good food?

"Come across poorly" is an understatement. I agree that Internet message boards make it difficult to interpret exact meaning, tone of voice, etc, though. And even on the Internet, there are times to be playful, and times to be joking and that's usually (but not always) clear, but I have to say anytime somebody makes very innapropriate sexual remarks to different people at different times, or pretends to be a pre-teen girl from Europe, that is a pattern that needs to be brought to attention, and it deserves to be taken seriously. All that on top of the overly repeated abuse of Dale's good will (in my opinion) and multitudes of commercial postings, no wonder serpent has gotten the treatment he has. If people were much more harsh I wouldn't really be surprised. It seems like serpent's manner has come across poorly to many people. That will happen in a written medium and I have learned to take what seem to be "grumpy", "gruff", "bitchy" or what-have-you types with a grain of salt. You're leaving out or dismissing the entire issue of harrasment and very innapropriate sexual innuendo and propositions. I find that a bit ludicrous, myself.Anyway, seemingly grumpy guy advertises his own stuff too much (and ticks certain people off) and then isn't allowed to mention anyone elses stuff because that would be advertising as well. Strikes me as a bit ludicrous.
You're failing to see the fact that you don't sell those whistles for profit, you're not in line to make a direct profit from people buying Generations, Sindts, or whatever from you. Serpent is not just a poster like you and me, he is a maker who is constantly promoting himself, and that's where the distinction lies.I happen to like Generation whistles and I think you should get one. Whoops! I advertised. I also like Sindts! Dangnabit! I advertised again! I also think that Grey Larson book looks pretty interesting. Strike three!
"Mentioning appreciation for something even when you get no money and don't benefit" is NOT what serpent has been doing, though. He does get money and does benefit. As I have said before, though, commercial posting is not what concerns me most about serpent.Come on, folks. If mentioning an appreciation for something even when you get no money and don't benefit from it is called advertising... we all do that! We recommend whistles and books and cds all day long and argue about the merits of each one. Maybe that was all he wanted to do?
I think it's a sad state of the board that many of the people who do constantly defend serpent against everything, including sexual harrasment and pretending to be little girls, happen to have freebies from him. Those are also some of the exact same people who respond to every single commerical post of his with positively glowing remarks. All you have to do is go back and look for yourself. No, I don't know serpent. No, I don't own any of his whistles. Yes, it is an indication of the sorry state of this board lately that I felt I had to mention that I don't have any connection to him.

Seriously though, I'd assume you'd have to message a moderator and ask him (or her, if we had a her moderator) to lock it. However, I personally don't think this thread is quite to the level of the flaming or nazi/fascist threads that have been locked. I agree with The Weekenders that it's been pretty civil, all considered, so far.
There really is no flaming or name calling here, just giving experiences and information. It's regrettable that most of it is piled onto one post, but look who started the post, and the intentions.
If every thread that served no purpose was locked, our entire board would dissapear in a couple seconds. What does one have to do to get a lock put on this thread? Other than an almost obscene interest of watching a public crucifixion it forwards no purpose

Because, Tony, I have a tendency to "pound things into the ground", and I try to make my point too many times in one thread, even after everybody already understands it, which, really, is not a good thing.
(edit to add that I didn't say I was done with this thread, I said I was done at the point of speculating why serpent left, which he didn't really do.)

Shame. I personally never had a problem with the guy. But it is my experience from other boards that there is always somebody ready to start bad mouthing somebody else and causing problems. I think that's a sad fact of life.
