I completely forgot about that and hm... well I have made something as well but it is already 2 months ago so that is why I forgot anyway I thought I better not talk about it yet but as you are asking and I do not want to hide from you... I got a little help and advice as I got taught the same time I was making it (the teacher was Andreas Rogge and I am happy he is helping me with this project as well as a couple of other kind pipe makers). It has turned out very nice and makes live easier being a good one as I am learning to play the flute on it now. And what made me a little proud about my work was that it was found to be nice by JeanMichel Veillon It is from plum wood, of course a D and in Pratton style. (sorry for any typos, I edited 3 times already to get rid of them....)

AWESOME Brigitte! Now how about sound clips from you? Looks like Colin's lathe must be in working order finally. It looks like the head is lined? What are the rings made out of? Details! Let's see details! I'm really excited for you. I think that I knew you had been working on it, but I haven't seen that picture yet.

Erik
Erik, you are right. The head is lined. There is a brass tube all along inside the head piece and the barrel, so it is tunable. The rings are out of black delrin and I managed to get them niceley rounded and shiny in the end. This part was one of the scariest (oh.. I just remembered some more very scary moment like the embouchoure hole drilling or the first time taking the turning tool in my hands and actually start turning down the pieces of woods and...... ) as I easily could have scratched the already finished flute pieces. It is shellack finished and soaked in linseed oil afterwards. Be happy you do not have to listen to any sound samples yet . My embouchure is more than arguable at times but every now and again I get half way through March of King Laois already but then my hands and arms give up. I can now even more appreciate when I hear good flute players.
Orders? you must must be joking... this will take me some many much more time before thinking about this but when it has come I will be happy to tell you.
Brigitte
P.S. ..but hey anyone else out there who can take over the thread....
P.P.S ... and "as the cat is out of the bag" Colin made one, too....
P.P.P.S ... Erik it was not made in Colin's workshop but in a workshop in a castle. The lathe is in working condition now. It got in the workshop in third week of October and my little wood lathe in November. I am looking forward to the Christmas holidays in a week that I can go in there and do some more practicing, I also need some new bodhran sticks....

the bodhran player in my band uses a small condenser mic attached to the cross bar, seems to work pretty well, for recording though we use a big condenser on each side of the drum and then blend the sounds togeter and EQ the heck out of it, then add a little compression and reverb and a tiny bit of delay on the left track.ErikT wrote:Thank you everyone. I was hoping for a few atta-boys, but you were very generous. Good advice, Rob. I'll give it a shot. I did manage to find 4' hose clamps but I had to call everyone on the planet to get them to ship to me... all because I didn't want to order 2000 of them. I'm looking forward to see what you came up with for tuners. It really is about time that someone threw away the allen wrenches.
Mark, you do need help! If you build a couple support stands you could have a whole set drum. Or maybe if you put them in order, you could have a tuned set of toms. Here's a sound clip that proves that I have no right to own a bodhran, yet alone make them.... http://www.tullberg.com/drum.mp3 (it's 200K). I don't have a very good way to record the bodhran. Everything that I've tried comes out really flat. I've been talking with a guy back east that I may have make me a condensor mic especially for the bodhran. It'd make it into an electric drum If you or Rob have any suggestions, I'll certainly explore them.
chas, regarding wooden whistles... I actually have the guts of a wooden whistle started but I don't have any concrete plans for selling them. Same with the drum (which took about a year to finish in my spare time). They're just experiments for myself at this point.
Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement.

Well, Colin, it looks like you've been called out, my friend! Let's see it. (and I KNOW you can play the flute, so let's hear it too )

He does not have a picture of his yet and still has not worked out how to use his PC to record with it. It is sitting here in the office not connected for the last 5 months or so. There is a nice recording on a minidisc if I only would know how to get it on the computer and put it online.
How many P.P.Ssessesse are allowed then?
