LP of Pennsylvania Dutch folk songs by Tim Britton's father George, who as far as I know can't levitate...

I am Dutch but i fail to see ANY Dutch in the songtitles or explainations..
It's German.., not Dutch..

I wonder why americans always mix us up with Germans...

Like in the disney cartoon about the (not based on truth) story about Hans Brinkers with his finger in a dyke (one of those earth mounts, not the other ones..

) in which all the Dutch people speak German..

Maybe because "Duits" is "German" in Dutch and "Dutch" looks and sounds similar..

Anyway.., it's NOT the same.., there! ;p

How would you like it if us Europeans called you USA people Canadian huh? =p

Google turned up some background info about how the german settlers in this part of Pennsvlvania became called "Dutch": http://www.kerchner.com/padutch.htm. Beware, the page tries to play a midi file.

Basically it says "what do we care if it's Dutch or German, it's all Dutch to us..."

At least the midi file is a Dutch tune.. LOL
"The bird dance" which was recorded by some Dutch folks in the 80's with the help of some electronic keyboard or other..
We never really recovered from that one and always cringe if anyone brings it up..
It was a huge hit with mindless pubgoing peoples back then..

And sorry djm.., i had to make some comparison but from what i know, see and hear about the US i could have probably better said it the other way around because it would hurt more..

What if we europeans called all canadians americans?

I wrote that post in about 50 seconds. The title of the record IS "PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH FOLK SONGS," even though these people do speak a dialect of German. Most likely the settlers around them didn't care about niggling details such as this and simply called them "Dutch." I simply wanted to make fun of Tim Britton, is that so wrong?

Kevin, barely on topic here, I recognize that from Python, but has anyone ever translated it, or is it just mock-German?

It's not that people didn't care about the difference. They just didn't know! These people speaking a foreign language that the farmers had never heard said they were "Deutsch," which sounded to them a lot like Dutch. It stuck. Actually, most folks with that ancestry now call themselves Pennsylvania German, but the outsiders (still) don't know the difference, so they still say Dutch.
