Heh Jens, I'm so happy I got my fairly cheap (but nice) gold plated "One Ring" a few months back. I'm not sure how much I would have to pay should I buy one now.

It may be costly to acquire such a ring, but it's a lot harder to get rid of one - ask Frodo!
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

If all you want is a run-of-the-mill "One Ring", rather than the big "Original From The Movie" thing on ebay, look here instead:

http://www.badalijewelry.com/tolkien.htm

They look very nice, but still don't make you invisible or anything, I'm afraid...

I just read in the paper that Elijah Wood got to keep the original ring used in the movie. I wouldn't mind having one of those rings and someday when I have more money than I know what to do with I guess I'll know what to do with it.

This topic took an unexpected and fun twist.

Well, even if they don't make you
invisible, the cheaper rings make
you translucent--not bad for 15 dollars.

Now if Elijah Wood kept the original. . .what is being sold on eBay for that ridiculous sum?

Good comment John,

When you consider the quality of work that Mr.Copeland puts into his whistles- if these whistles were handmade concert band instrument instead of whistles they would well be into thousands of dollars. Just check out a few websites of handmade band instruments and see.

A good conical taper takes a lot of work. Brass has to be annealed - it only takes so much treatment and then it has to be annealed again - time consuming.

I fully agree with both statements.

Jens

PS: I should point out that I am actually in no position to evaluate statement #2 fairly, my German being only slightly better than Basil Fawlty's.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier!

Just how much do think a high-end whistlemaker (or any instrument maker) makes per hour?

Lots of factors at play here..., far beyond material cost.

To each his own perspective. But if it's worth it to you, end of argument. Distilling value of a handmade instrument to net profit above dollars per hour expended by the maker just doesn't get it for me. WHen I'm willing and satisfied I walk away a happy man.....ah Michael, Colin, Mike B., Michael G., Glenn et al - bless you. Philo

I tend to agree with Philo..if you're happy with the product and don't mind the price, it's worth it.
Also, I would be surprised if the actual percentage of profit for a handcrafted whistle is greater than a that of a $7.00
mass produced whistle made with 50 cents worth of raw material.
