Just got an email from Wyobadger who tells me that he can't get access to this board because the school's lichen filter won't allow it.

There's a mystery for you. Anybody seen anything that might be triggering it?

What about "Dale's Naked Black Splendour" on the inexpensive whistle page?

My wife always thinks the term "fipple" sounds vaguely naughty, maybe that's it?

Hmm, could it be the flute lichen thread. Maybe the word lichen is the problem.

Could be anything. I tried to post something on a backpacking forum which contained the word "bungee" (as in "bungee cord"). In the post the word was replaced by an ellipsis because it contained the letter sequence "bung".

It's overuse of the word "blow". :boggle:

I just knew eventually it would catch up with us.

Is he trying to go to the direct url, http://chiffboard.mati.ca?

I know the proxy server and filtering implementation at our school was silly. It really could be any number of things.

It doesn't have to actually be anything objectionable. Several years ago I bookmarked a Scottish travel website, then my company installed a new filter and whenever I tried to access that site, I got a picture of Barney Fife wagging his finger at me, telling me I had been denied access because of lichen. It did that for several sites, no rhyme or reason to it. Finally we updated to a new filter and haven't had that problem since.

I'd bet a lot it's the "flute lichen" thread. I was really nervous when I'd check the board at work (I work for the US government) when the flute lichen thread was prominent because, quite naturally, Uncle Sam doesn't like lichen on his computers, and I bet he'd not understand flute lichen...

It may be that the filter is set to disallow visits to ANY message boards. It might be an idea to try other boards to see if that's the problem.

Bung is a rude word? In the UK there are two meanings -

noun: a small rubber cork for sealing the hole in the bottom of a boat, or a stopper in a bottle

verb: slang term for throw, or pass. e.g. "Hey Riseard, bung me that monkey wrench"

What could it possibly refer to that is rude?

I once had the work "chink" disallowed because it is an antiquated slang term for a Chinese person. It's common to "go for a chinky" meaning to get a chinese takeaway, no insult intended.

I used it to refer to a small crack or gap in a wall (as in Shakepeare's Midsummer Night's Dream), and also the small beam of light that may shine through such a gap. For me a crack is too small and a gap too big for what I was describing.

It might be posts like: He thrust his long, hard whistle into her eagerly waiting lips..

Then, there were those threads about whistlemaking which talked about things like rigid, throbbing tools...
