Does your playing bring disrepute to your profession?

- Tell us something.: Well, I've been a contributor and visitor to this site since 2001. At one time or another, one of my photographs was the opening page photograph. My teacher was Bill Ochs. I play the Penny Whistle. Not a lot else to say.

Thus far, the only thing that my public whistle playing brings disrepute to is ......... my whistle playing. But, speaking of the Draconian treatment of street musicians, I have a friend who plays the HurdyGurdy--the real Hurdy Gurdy, not that organ grinder thing, and he ain't got a monkey either. He lives in constant fear of getting busted, despite New York City's otherwise liberal tolerance of street musicians. It seems that there is still a law on the books from around the turn of the century that specifically prohibits playing the Hurdy Gurdy and one or two other instruments associated, (IMHO) with central European and/or Italian immigrants. He believes that the framers of the ordinance meant the 'organ grinder' instrument and simply mis-named it. The last time I saw the guy he was wailing away outside Zabars--he sure knew where the bucks where, I'll say that.

By the way, we run the East Coast collection point. Sort of a cottage industry, so to speak!fatveg wrote:Jim,jim_mc wrote:Infuriating! Those confounded French! I'm going to pour a bottle of bordeaux into the river and call my breakfast "Freedom Toast" in protest!
After much practice I've developed a sure-fire method for efficiently disposing of French wine, so if you want you (and any other C&F member concerned about this incident) can send me your unwanted wine and I will 'process' it. If you have a lot of French wine to get rid of, give me some warning so that I can arrange for some 'colleagues' to come round and help with the process.
Yours Magnanimously,
'Veg.
