The Lord of the Dance

Post by raiden29 »

Hello Whistle lovers!

Would any of you by any chance know where can one get musical notes for the whistle in the key of d for songs from the Lord of the Dance. I know it's probably not the highlight of Irish music, but I finished a couple of songs all ready, and there is a big demand here for some Lord of the Dance tunes..

Playing them by ear just doesn't cut it....

good day to all,
and whistle away!

A Lord of the Dance question and a Titanic question all in one lucky night! It's a literal and metaphoric spring here at Chiff and Fipple!

I'm sorry, Raiden, I can't help you. But I'm very happy you're here! Welcome!

height of Irish music? Nope, it's a old shaker tune. :)

Don't know where they got those "pagan" lyrics, but the tune itself ("simple gifts") isn't pagan in origin...

try JC's tunefinder.

if you actually played the tune, you'd notice the melody was almost the same as the one from "lord of the dance".

Right. It was written by Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. (in America), in 1848.
Don't know where they got those "pagan" lyrics, but the tune itself ("simple gifts") isn't pagan in origin...
Here are the old lyrics:

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'Tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down to where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
It will be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend, we will not be ashamed
To turn, turn, will be our delight,
'Til by turning, turning, we come round right.

Kind of ironic that this song has been used as an advertising jingle to sell
rather pricey cars, and as the theme music for the "tabloid show"
American Journal.

Whatever is to be said of the Shakers, they were an unusual sect! With
their universal ban on marriage, they have not raised up any new
generation of Shakers, and so have about died off.

There are still a few shakers around, but I think it's only a few dozen. Not many to say the least, I'd be surprised if there were more than 100...

Unless there has been a Shaker revival, I thought there were exactly 3 left as of about 1990 (with one of those being the converted care taker for the last 2 surviving members).

I'd love to learn I'm wrong on this, because I find them a fascinating group.

I would like to thank you all for your replies and what I have learnt from you. however, I wasn't very clear: I need the tunes from the dance show "The Lord of the Dance".
I got some variations of the main tune, but need all of the tune, and others.

If any of you are able to obtain it, I will be mostly grateful..

good day,

Would " a sort of hassidic goy" be acceptable shorthand for "shaker"?

I sense an outburst of silliness being held back because everybody has jokes in the back of their minds but doesn't want to give offence.

By the way, sorry I can't help with LOTD, I felt you were being given the wrong answer but don't know where to find the right one. You could try putting "Bill Whelan" into a search engine in front of "Lord" and "Dance", he's the composer you're after.

Somebody actually created midi scores of some of the tunes and they are all over the web.
I found some here:
http://members.aol.com/flymaxima/lotdirish.htm

There are several software programs that will show you the actual musical notation for the midi file. A free one is NoteWorthy Player from:
http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/
But I am sure there are better ones.

That's how I teased out the melody for the slip jig "Stolen Kiss".
Though, this route isn't a whole lot easier than figuring it out by ear!
bye

Midinotation is good, free for 30 days IIRC,
and whistle tab - shows which holes to cover (plus guitar & harmonic tab) from Tablature Karaoke which is free.
You can slow down the tune on both to e.g. 50% speed ( or slower!)
and change pitch and key on the Tablature Karaoke.
Do a search on C&F or Google and you'll find them no problem.

the shakers are a christian sect that branched off of the quakers. Some of their notable characteristics were complete celibacy (which is why there are few of them these days), more or less equality between men and women (and in msny ways, women were the leading group, the shakers were founded by a woman after all), and fairly unstructured worship. Oh, and they're known for making good furniture. :)
