Wexford Carol companion

Post by CHasR »

Looking for an honestly, authentically Irish, Uilleann-friendly Christmas carol to contrast with the Wexford Carol for performance this friday 12.21.12.
Setting is parochial school assembly where contrasting carols from several bagpiping traditions are featured. thanks.

I was under the impression that this was a very old tune and definitely in the public domain. It was recorded by the Chieftains on the Bells of Dublin where it's noted as a traditional tune. I learned it as a child (which is starting to feel like a long time ago ... ) :(

I have the music and words in a book and it says it's very old.

It's not a "traditional Irish" jig, but we've followed "Wexford Carol" with "I Saw Three Ships"," and it's really quite a nice combination.

The Wexford Carol has got to be one of the least pipe-friendly tunes. I've performed it in G and in A and in both cases you get a workout on the keys.

I played it on this album, in G, and it was OK using the Fnat key, but I only had to play the first section of the tune. The high part is trickier with all those Fnats.

Thanks all for the input! :thumbsup: :D
Alas, there was only time for Wexford Carol,
and it IS indeed a finger-twister of a workout;
but, it's one of those "once-learned, seldom forgotten" pieces.
See yous all next year! :party:
