Either BBC or AOL pooped out on me when I tried to listen to the show, but they have archived it. Click on "listen again" on the home page, and you can listen to it anytime. Worked fine this time: bit of Mary Bergin showing off some of her collection, some Kwela from Positively Testcard, some prehistoric bone whistles, etc. A nice half hr intro to show your friends who can't fathom why you are interested in this silly instrument...

I just spent an enjoyable half hour listening to the programme via the "Listen Again" link on the Radio 4 webpage.

You'll enjoy it. Honest :)

Also inspiring listening to people play their whistles.
No whistles were harmed in the transmission of this communication.

I can't seem to listen to this. I just get the following message:

rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/fri1102.ra?title="Friday 11am"&start="0:00"

Can anyone help?

I can't get it to play either. Windows media player doesn't support .ram files, yet when I click on the BBC site, that's what it downloads for me. Great help I don't think. Thanks BeeB.

Glad I got to hear it (crackly) and got it taped. Not much help to the rest of you though.

Definitely worth hearing, and telling your non-believing friends about.

Edit: Works fine on my AOL browser at home, and my recording worked if a but fuzzy. I loved the bone whistle from 40,000 years ago!

The BBC program is brilliant! Norman Dannatt is the star--if you don't count that upstart James Galway!

Great program, loved the bit about toting whistles instead of guns in Soweto!

A friend of mine makes replicas of these very primitive flutes from turkey or deer bones. Very neat things to play! Uses flint tools, also home made..

How many notes do they play, Paul? And now large are they?

There is a huge variation on both of those-- as few as 2-3 notes, as many as an octave. They do not play a traditional scale either. Eric has one tiny one about 3 inches long, some that he has made are about 6 inches. It's very cool to close your eyes, play one of these, and imagine our distant ancestors sitting around a fire under the stars thousands of years ago, hearing these sounds...

The program is downloadable and available at any time, I think. I listened to it just the other day, no special time.
